J Balvin couldn’t have asked for more enthusiastic, talented backup dancers than the Lagos Dreamcatchers for his performance during Global Goal: Unite for Our Future on June 27.
That sort of dream-team pairing was at the heart of the virtual event. Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original Broadway cast of HAMILTON joined Jimmy Fallon & The Roots for a fun song; actors from X-Men came together for a quirky skit; and Kerry Washington joined forces with Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi for inspiring words on racial justice.
All of these appearances were in support of the event’s goal of raising funds for the fight against COVID-19. All told, more than $1.5 billion in new grants and $5.4 billion in loans and guarantees, for a total of $6.9 billion, were pledged by political and corporate leaders and philanthropists to provide equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.
These funds will also help vulnerable and marginalized communities rebuild in the aftermath of the pandemic.
