New York City, April 30, 2025 // Today at the Global Citizen NOW summit in New York, Global Citizen, the world’s leading international advocacy organization on a mission to end extreme poverty, announced more details about Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia, which will take place on November 1, 2025, and will focus on amplifying the voices of Indigenous peoples and local communities in the Amazon rainforest.

The first edition of the festival to be hosted in Latin America, Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia will take place at the Estádio Olímpico do Pará, known as Mangueirão, and will drive a campaign to raise $1 billion to protect, restore and rewild the Amazon rainforest, seek commitments for a just energy transition worldwide, and support communities on the frontlines of climate impacts. Belém’s own Gaby Amarantos will join fellow Brazilian superstars Anitta and Seu Jorge as festival headliners, and speakers will include local Indigenous leaders including Chief Raoni Metuktire, as well as a special guest performance by Coldplay's Chris Martin. Additional speakers and participants will be announced in the coming months.

Free tickets to Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia are available exclusively to the people of Belém and Pará State, Brazil, and can be earned by taking action on the Global Citizen app or at GlobalCitizenFestivalAmazonia.com, or by sending a WhatsApp message to +55 (11) 4040-7099 to demand action to end deforestation, accelerate a just transition to renewables and support communities on the frontlines of climate impacts. Eligibility will be confirmed through a residency verification process.

To ensure equitable ticketing access for local residents of Pará State, including for individuals without smartphones or internet access, Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia tickets will also be made available to global citizens who participate in community volunteering initiatives across Belém and the State of Pará, such as tree planting, riverbank clean-ups, and other environmental service projects developed in partnership with local nonprofits. Ticket access for people living in remote and underserved areas will be provided in partnership with Indigenous organizations, community associations, and local leaders across Amazonia. More details will be shared in the coming months.

Continuing years of advocacy and partnership with Indigenous leaders and grassroots communities on the frontlines of protecting the Amazon rainforest, Global Citizen will elevate their voices and urgent calls to action to the world, the weekend before world leaders gather in Belém for the COP30 conference.

In recognition of the importance of preserving the natural environment in the Festival’s location, Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia will be one of the most sustainable, lowest impact, large-scale events ever to take place in South America. Global Citizen is utilizing innovative sustainability initiatives and partnerships, employing significant mitigation efforts in travel, power, production, and community impact. More details of Global Citizen’s mitigation plans will be provided in the coming months. Examples include:

  • Battery-powered stage, recharged by solar: The mobile, rechargeable battery system that has powered Coldplay’s ‘Music Of The Spheres’ World Tour internationally will be used for the first time in Brazil, where no such system currently exists, to power the main stage with solar generated directly from Mangueirão stadium;
  • Sustainable energy legacy project: The battery system will be left in Brazil and be made available for other events to utilize through 2026 to reduce energy impact;
  • Event Waste Minimization & Diversion: Continuing the sustainability practices Global Citizen Festival has employed for over a decade in New York, landfill waste will be dramatically reduced through the use of compostable packaging and where possible reusable and recyclable materials. Excess food will be donated locally, and free water stations will be available through the venue;
  • Third-party Accountability & Emissions Mitigation: Oversight from third-party sustainability consultants, including Hope Solutions, with support from producing partners Rock World and Live Nation, will aim to support a collaborative and measurable emissions reduction strategy including the above measures with the intention to help mitigate the Festival’s environmental footprint.
  • Freight & Travel: Reducing travel and cargo needs and mass transit by employing local crews, minimizing new fabrication and material use in staging and infrastructure, and working with partner travel vendors to reduce travel and transport impacts and track carbon emissions for beyond value chain mitigation in support of projects in Amazonia;
  • Event sustainability guidelines & training: Local Brazilian teams, partners and event networks will be equipped in international event sustainability standard best practice through the creation of bi-lingual handbook materials and both pre-event and onsite training.

Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia will focus on amplifying the voices of Indigenous peoples and local communities in the Amazon rainforest. This year, global citizens everywhere will unite to call for urgent action to:

End Deforestation

The world's tropical rainforests are the lungs of our planet — but they’re being pushed to a point of no return. We are campaigning for at least $1 billion in new investments from OECD countries, philanthropies, companies, and major financial institutions to protect and restore the Amazon, supporting financial mechanisms like the Amazon Fund and the Fund for the Development of the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean (FILAC), as well as Indigenous- and locally led projects curated by campaign partner Re:wild. At the same time, we are calling on Amazon basin countries – including Brazil – to recognize and strengthen the land rights of Indigenous peoples, whose stewardship is essential to the protection of these vital ecosystems.

Additionally, companies will be mobilized to commit to end deforestation by investing in community based projects like the Equitable Earth Coalition, which directs climate finance to scale transformative, Indigenous and Traditional Communities led conservation initiatives that protect forests, safeguard biodiversity, and provide vital resources to communities in the Amazon.

Accelerate a Just Transition to Renewables

Without phasing out fossil fuels, global climate goals are out of reach. We are advocating for countries – including France and Germany, as well as the European Union, South Africa, Nigeria, and others – to submit ambitious national climate plans that set clear timelines for phasing out fossil fuels and committing to a future powered by renewable energy.

Support Communities on the Frontlines of Climate Impacts

Ending extreme poverty requires the world’s biggest emitters to support those bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, from deadly heat and rising seas to crop failures and water shortages. We are calling on high-income countries to step up with bold financial commitments that equip communities across the Global South — including smallholder farmers — with the tools to survive and adapt. We are also urging governments to hold polluting industries accountable by introducing fair and innovative levies on sectors such as aviation and fossil fuels — helping fund the very efforts frontline communities need to build resilience.

“As we move toward COP30 in Belém, standing alongside Global Citizen in Brazil helps to shine a light on our stories, our struggles, and our solutions,” said Chief Raoni Metuktire. “Working side by side in this festival can help us change the course of the planet, showing that protecting the forest and respecting its guardians is the path to a possible future.”

“It is an immense joy to be part of Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia, which is taking place in my homeland, Belém. This event is much more than music; it is a global call to protect and value the Amazon, its biodiversity, and the people who live here,” said Gaby Amarantos. “As an artist from the Amazon, I feel both the responsibility and the pride of bringing the voice of my region to the world, showing how urgent it is to care for our forest, our culture, and our communities. The Amazon is a source of life, resilience, and hope. Participating in this collective movement is an important step toward the future we want, where development and preservation go hand in hand. I invite everyone to join in this vital struggle for climate justice and respect for Indigenous and traditional peoples.”

“In our visits to the Amazon and conversations with Indigenous leaders and community elders, Global Citizen has heard their call, and we are honored to accept their invitation to partner with their communities. We acknowledge our responsibility to listen, learn, stand alongside, and amplify – as loudly as we can – both the voices and the urgent needs of Indigenous and local communities,” said Michael Sheldrick, Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact and Government Relations Officer, Global Citizen. “That’s what the Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia campaign is all about. Not only are we laser focused on building a global coalition to raise $1 billion for the rainforest’s preservation, but we are dedicating our advocacy, energy and platforms to centering and amplifying these powerful calls to action, culminating on our festival stage on November 1st to ensure their voices cannot be ignored.”

The Global Citizen Festival: Amazonia agenda and impact strategy are being shaped in consultation with a coalition of supporters, including leading social movements, foundations and nonprofit organizations, such as 1.5 Degrees of Peace, Africa Forward–Catalyst 2030, African Climate Reality Project, African Renaissance Trust, AGITASI, AID LIFE LEARN ENVIRONMENT, ALLIED Global Coordination, Amazon Concertation, Amazonia 21, Amigos da Terra - Amazônia Brasileira, ANMIGA, Aspire Artemis Foundation, Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizen, Black Girl’s Dream Initiative, Black Professionals in International Affairs, Blended Finance Taskforce, Bread for the World, Buyambo, Center for Global Alchemy and Cross-Cultural Leadership, Center for Music Ecosystems, CIVICUS, Climate Action Platform - Africa, Climate and Health Foundation, Climate Cardinals, Comitê COP30, Common Good Marketplace, Connected Development, Coordenação das Organizações Indígenas da Amazônia Brasileira (COIAB), dev.tv, Don't Gas Africa, EarthRights International, Education Cannot Wait - UN Global Fund for Education in Emergencies, Engajamundo, Environmental Advocates NY, Equitable Earth, Equitable Energy, European Center for Not-for-Profit Law, Farmer on Fire, Focus 2030, Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, Funatura, Fundação Amazônia Sustentável, Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica, Fundo Casa Socioambiental, Global Nation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Gender and Economy Research Center NPGE, Girl Up, Global Health Advocates, Global Leading Light Initiatives, Global Nation, Global Public Investment Network, Go Global Enterprises - Educate, Lead, Advocate, Global Witness, Greenpeace Africa, Greenpeace Brasil, Hope For Her International, Hungry for Action, iDE (International Development Enterprises), IEC Global Impact Fund IEPÉ - Instituto de Pesquisa e Formação Indígena, Ignition Packaging, Indigenous Peoples Rights International, Instituto Juma, Instituto Juruá, Instituto Kabu, Instituto Libio de Proteção à Natureza, Instituto Makarapy, Instituto Peabiru, Instituto Raoni, Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), Instituto SOS Pantanal, Integrity Initiatives International, Jacob's Ladder Africa, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), International Labour Organization, Iswe Foundation, Japan NGO Center for International Cooperation (JANIC), Jara, Junior Achievement (JA) Africa, KIKAO CULTURES, LEAP Africa, Life of Pachamama, Loss & Damage Youth Coalition, Malaria No More UK, Marafiki United Green Youths Initiative, mothers2mothers, Movimento Nacional de População de Rua do Rio de Janeiro, Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF), OHCHR, ONE, OurCause, Outright International, OWIT Brussels, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, Pandemic Action Network, Partnership for Transparency, Peace Boat US, Rare, Phakamani Young Minds Academy, Plastic Punch, Power Shift Africa, Power to Girls, Project Vote SA, Projeto Saúde e Alegria, Rare, Rede Brasileira de Biodiversidade e Clima, Rewriting Earth, Rewriting Earth, Rotary International, SDG2 Advocacy Hub, Shamba Centre for Food and Climate, Sharing Strategies, Shule Foundation, Sustentabilidad Sin Fronteras (SSF), Stark NKD, Sungulo Comm NPC, Sustainability and Climate Podcast, Teen aid International Organization, Território Quilombola do Abacatal, The Access Challenge, The Asian Network, The Erline Bradshaw Foundation, The Global Education & Leadership Foundation (tGELF), The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, The Global Sunrise Project, The Green Protector, The International Fund for Public Interest Media, The Village Youth Fund, TheCreators2030 UN SDGs, Arts, Youth, Sports & Global Citizen Initiative, UNESCO Center for Peace, UNFPA, United Nations Association of the National Capital Area, United Nations Joint Sustainable Development Goals Fund, United Young Farmers Forum, Universal Access Project at the United Nations Foundation, Urgent Action Sister Funds,WA Bat Network, Walkers Reserve, Women At Risk International Foundation, World Health Organization, Yamba Malawi, Young Activists Summit, and Youth Climate Collaborative.
