Global Citizen NOW, the influential summit dedicated to ending extreme poverty, is making its way to the historic Estação das Docas in Belém, Brazil, on July 24, 2025. This one-day thought leadership summit is a part of Global Citizen’s year-long campaign to Protect the Amazon and comes ahead of Global Citizen Festival: Amazônia, taking place in November.
With the Amazon nearing an irreversible tipping point in the face of the climate crisis, Global Citizen NOW: Amazônia comes at a pivotal time, giving the region’s leaders a global platform to shape the climate conversation ahead of one of the most important summits of the decade — the UN’s annual Climate Conference, which will see its 30th edition this year (COP30). It will convene the most powerful voices from Indigenous communities across the Amazon, policymakers, artists, and global allies to spotlight local solutions, issue bold calls to support frontline communities, and protect and rewild the rainforest.
Global Citizen NOW: Amazônia will be hosted by journalist Luiza Zveiter and Indigenous activist José Kaeté, and convene a powerful coalition of leaders from across the Amazon Basin, including Marina Silva, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Brazil; Helder Barbalho, Governor, Pará State; and Célia Xakriabá, Federal Deputy, Indigenous Activist, and Co-Founder, ANMIGA; Indigenous and civil society leaders such as Helena Gualinga, Indigenous Peoples Rights Defender; Juma Xipaia, Chief of Kaarimã Village, Xipaya Territory, Founder of Instituto Juma & Producer of YANUNI Film; Toya Manchineri, General Coordinator, COIAB; and Angela Mendes, President, Chico Mendes Committee; policy experts including Ilona Szabó, Co-Founder & President, Instituto Igarapé; Marcio Astrini, Executive Director, Observatório do Clima; and Natalie Unterstell, President, Instituto Talanoa; Gabriella Dorlhiac, Executive Director, ICC Brasil; and Marcelo Thomé da Silva de Almeida, President, Federation of Industries of the State of Rondônia.
“The Amazon isn’t just one of the world’s most important ecosystems for our climate – it’s home to over 40 million people, including hundreds of Indigenous nations. As deforestation pushes it toward a dangerous tipping point, we must not only listen, but act on the calls from those who’ve protected the rainforest for generations. That’s why this summit matters. Global Citizen NOW: Amazônia is a chance for Indigenous and regional leaders from across the Amazon to shape the COP30 agenda early – so when the world gathers here in November, we leave with a clear message: the status quo is not an option,” said Michael Sheldrick, Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact and Government Relations Officer, Global Citizen.
The summit will feature an influential line-up of participants renowned for their impactful work across climate justice, energy transition, indigenous rights and more. This includes: Vanuza Do Abacatal, Political Leader, Human Rights Advocate & Coordinator of Racial Equality Policies in Ananindeua; Rodrigo Agostinho, President, IBAMA; Tasso Azevedo, General Coordinator, MapBiomas; Leo Cerda, Indigenous Environmental & Human Rights Defender; Juan Carlos Jintiach, Executive Secretary, Global Alliance of Territorial Communities & Technical Advisor to COICA; Ronaldo Gonçalves Morato, Country Director, Panthera Brazil; Kleber Karipuna, Executive Coordinator of APIB & Co-Chair of the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities; Rodrigo Medeiros, Senior Brazil Lead, Re:wild; Nabil Moura Kadri, Deputy Managing Director of the Environment Division, BNDES; Larissa Pinto Moraes, Executive Director, Engajamundo; Lucas Nassar, Executive Director, Laboratório da Cidade; Eduardo Góes Neves, Professor of Archaeology, Universidade de São Paulo; Carolina Pasquali, Executive Director, Greenpeace Brazil; João Paulo Rodrigues, National Leader, MST; Claudelice Santos, Environmental and Human Rights Activist, and Coordinator, Instituto Zé Claudio e Maria; Caetano Scannavino, Social Entrepreneur; Jean Ferreira da Silva, Executive Director, Gueto Hub & Co-Creator, COP das Baixadas; Priscila Tapajowara, President, Mídia Indígena; Puyr Tembé, Secretary of State for Indigenous Peoples of Pará; Eloy Terena, Executive Secretary, Ministry of Indigenous Peoples; Úrsula Vidal, Journalist & Secretary of Culture of Pará State; Manuela Yamada, Director of Certification, Ecosystem Restoration Standard; and Luiza Zveiter, Journalist.
The programming at Global Citizen NOW: Amazônia will focus on three urgent priorities:

- Advance a just energy transition that supports workers and communities.
- Deliver climate finance to help vulnerable regions adapt to accelerating climate impacts and build resilience.
All the programming at the summit will be conducted in Portuguese, Spanish, and English with simultaneous translation. Every session will be filmed and distributed globally to amplify the voices of Amazonian leaders and connect local priorities with international decision-makers ahead of COP30.
Global Citizen NOW: Amazônia builds on the summit’s growing global footprint, following the fourth flagship edition in New York, and the first-ever events outside of the US held in Melbourne, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Paris, France in 2024. This year, the summit series will further expand its global footprint and head to Detroit, USA; Seville, Spain; and Johannesburg, South Africa; bringing together leaders and advocates from around the world to drive meaningful action to end extreme poverty.
The summit is sponsored by Banco do Brasil in collaboration with Re:wild, with Policy Partners Bezos Earth Fund and Open Society Foundations, and produced by Gael Productions.
