Independent media organizations are going through a tough time. They are facing financial problems, attacks from hostile governments, and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of which are undermining their ability to cover important issues. In places like Guinea and Chad, governments are revoking licenses and imposing censorship, harming the media that is crucial for a healthy democracy. What's even more concerning is that only 0.3% of international aid goes to support independent media.
This lack of resources directly impacts the media's ability to investigate and expose corruption and injustices. Currently, 128 regions around the world have journalism that is deemed “problematic” or “very serious,” making it harder to address both local and global issues, such as the climate crisis.
The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) aims to tackle these challenges by providing funding to keep independent media running. This support is crucial to ensure that accurate and relevant information continues to reach the public, helping to shed light on issues that many would prefer to keep hidden.
Support the International Fund for Public Interest Media by signing the petition calling on global leaders to commit to a US$150 million funding target. With this support, independent media worldwide will be able to continue its essential work and provide real, veridic information, especially in countries that need it the most.
