In 2024, fires in the Amazon worsened air quality in cities across Brazil and South America, including São Paulo and Santiago, showing the impacts go far beyond the forest. Brazil recorded 278,299 fire hotspots, destroying areas the size of Switzerland. These fires threaten habitats, rivers, biodiversity, and climate balance globally.
Indigenous fire brigades, supported by local organizations, are trained and equipped to fight fires and protect their territories. The Territorial Protection & Forest Fire Prevention in Indigenous Lands project invests in prevention, monitoring, and rapid response, supporting over 100 brigades and communities to reduce fire outbreaks.
Everyone can help protect the Amazon — from donating to brigades to supporting awareness campaigns. Take the quiz to learn more about the fires and how this project is helping protect the Amazon for people, wildlife, and the planet.
