Climate change does not always arrive as a dramatic headline. Sometimes, it looks like rain coming weeks too late, a river shrinking before planting season, a new pest spreading through a field, or a sudden storm destroying a crop just before it can reach market.

Across Africa — where agriculture is the continent’s biggest economic driver — the climate story is already an agricultural story as climate change forms agriculture’s biggest threat. 

Climate adaptation is about protecting our food systems from the existing and worsening impacts of the climate crisis. Sustainable agriculture is about making decisions and implementing (or creating) systems with the mandate of protecting our natural resources every step of the way — and, in fact, finding innovative ways to best use our natural resources without exploiting them. 

You might work in regenerative farming, agroforestry, renewable energy, water management, climate data, agricultural engineering or the circular economy. This sector is about creating the tools, services, and systems that make climate resilience possible.

Why should I do it?

You may belong here if a difficult problem makes you curious rather than defeated.

You care about the natural world, but you are interested in solutions and not just slogans. You can connect science with daily life and think about both the immediate emergency and the longer future.

Perhaps you like building things. You may be fascinated by weather patterns, soil, energy, or technology. You might want to create a business that earns revenue while solving an environmental problem.

This field rewards people who can adapt, because the challenge itself keeps changing. A solution that works in coastal Senegal may not suit Zambia’s drought-prone south. An irrigation system designed for a commercial farm may be useless to a smallholder unless it is affordable, repairable, and suited to local water conditions.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Because so much of African agriculture still depends directly on rainfall and weather patterns — the climate crisis has made both more erratic.

In 2025, drought affected more than 8.5 million people in East Africa, while scientists found that climate change had intensified extraordinary rainfall behind deadly flooding in parts of West Africa.

Climate change impacts the entire food system. When a harvest fails, traders have less to sell; in the case of extreme weather, distributors can face difficulties due to damaged infrastructure; and across the board families face higher food prices. When power supplies become disrupted in storms or extreme heat damages storage, food can be lost even after it has been successfully grown.

But this challenge is also producing some of the continent’s most interesting work. Entrepreneurs are developing solar-powered cold rooms, low-cost irrigation, biological pest controls, intuitive weather platforms, and new uses for agricultural waste. Engineers are finding ways to produce more food with less water. Farmers are testing crops and methods better suited to new conditions.

Who else in the food system would I work with?

You would work especially closely with people in Seed Systems.

Climate experts can identify where drought, heat, flooding, or new diseases are likely to threaten production. Seed breeders can respond by developing varieties that mature faster, use water more efficiently or resist particular stresses. 

You would also work with policy workers to turn climate plans into budgets and programmes, or if you are a local implementer of climate-resilient systems, you can work with policy specialists to provide or implement national or regional feedback on climate stresses and solutions. Market and finance experts could help sustainable farmers afford irrigation, renewable energy, or improved storage.

MEET Mathias Yabe 

Mathias Yabe is the Ghanaian social entrepreneur behind Akofresh, a sustainable food systems organisation helping farmers keep their produce fresher for longer. With his team of dedicated, young employees he manages a cold-chain storage solution (including mobile refrigeration) across Kumasi. Sustainability runs across all operations as the cold storage is solar-powered, the post-harvest food waste is reduced significantly, and farmers can access the storage through a pay-to-use system that activates as and when they need it. SeedBiz has turned a waste management system into a sustainable solution that provides farmers with nutritious feed and fertilizer, while keeping communities clean, and providing employment opportunities for young people.

The programme aims to reach 10 million young people and support at least 1.5 million of them to access agricultural work  — that means you, too, if you’re interested! It does this by addressing more than skills alone.
