Frequently Asked Questions

What is Global Citizen: Recovery Plan for the World?

Global Citizen: Recovery Plan for the World is a campaign to end COVID-19 and kickstart a global recovery.

Our five-point policy plan and year-long campaign and series of events that centers on ending COVID-19 for all; ending the hunger crisis; resuming learning everywhere; protecting the planet; and advancing equity for all.

If we can get vaccines to everyone who needs them, get children back in classrooms, get food back on the table for everyone, recommit to protecting our planet, and make serious progress on achieving better equity, we will be in a much stronger place to achieve the Global Goals by 2030. Without it, we will fail.

What is Global Citizen trying to achieve with the Recovery Plan for the World?

End COVID-19 for All: Global Citizen is calling on all wealthy countries to donate excess doses to other countries in need to ensure vaccines are made globally available to everyone, everywhere before vaccine resistant strains begin to emerge and gather pace.

End the Hunger Crisis: Global Citizen is advocating for increases in long-term investments to ensure food systems remain resilient and production is not disrupted during the recovery process.

Resume Learning Everywhere: Global Citizen is calling on governments, businesses, and philanthropists to increase investment in global education, and ensure resources and action to prioritize the world’s most vulnerable learners, including children that are living through conflict and crisis, girls, and young learners who lack internet access.

Protect the Planet: Global Citizen is advocating for additional climate finance, supporting low carbon economies and development, and promoting carbon neutrality, in line with preventing global temperatures from rising beyond 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. Effort will focus on supporting underserved communities and people living in extreme poverty.

Advance Equity for All: Global Citizen is calling on the private sector to lean in through transformative commitments to people-centered justice, gender equality, racial equity, inclusion of persons with disabilities, and support for human rights and justice defenders worldwide.

Global Citizen at the G20 Summit, a global moment jointly hosted by the Italian G20 Presidency and the European Commission. How are you keeping people safe from COVID at in-person events?

Ending the COVID-19 pandemic is at the forefront of the Recover Better Together campaign, recognizing that no one is safe until we all are. As vaccines are rolled out across 2021, we expect that in-person events with COVID-safe precautions will become possible in many places. Global Citizen is working closely with local leaders, health authorities including the WHO, event production and broadcast partners to ensure that in-person components to the campaign are COVID-safe for crew and attendees.

What is Global Citizen's carbon offset commitment for the Recovery Plan for the World campaign and how much as Global Citizen offset to date?

Global Citizen has partnered with South Pole, the leading corporate climate action advisor, to reduce and offset carbon emissions.

Global Citizen will offset our operational footprint for the last two years to receive a 2020 and 2021 climate neutrality label. In addition, Global Citizen will offset Global Citizen LIVE, a multi-hour global broadcast event featuring a blockbuster lineup of artists, with performances from all over the world on Sept 25, 2021.

South Pole will independently certify emissions, and together with Global Citizen will identify impactful projects in areas such as forestry and sustainable agriculture to invest in.

To date, Global Citizen has offset the 2019 Global Citizen Festival and the 2020 One World: Together at Home broadcast.

The offsets Global Citizen has purchased have benefitted the Envira Amazonia Tropical Forest Conservation in Brazil. The Envira project in Brazil’s Amazon basin protects tropical forest from logging and encroaching cattle ranches. This simultaneously preserves the areas rich biodiversity and mitigates the release of carbon emissions. The project also fosters economic opportunities for local communities through sustainable farming and the sale of acai berries and medicinal plants, promotes environmental stewardship, and provides health services and educational courses

Why does Global Citizen think it can be successful with this campaign?

In 2020, Global Citizen rallied to help deliver critical financial commitments to fight COVID-19 and led advocacy efforts, which resulted in nearly USD $1.1 billion being disbursed to support the pandemic response. Global Citizen’s efforts centered on  the equitable distribution of COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines for everyone everywhere, and the organization’s advocacy also addressed the effect of the pandemic more broadly. Acting as a continuation of the impact achieved through Global Citizen’s One World: Together at Home and Global Goal: Unite for Our Future campaigns, Global Citizen’s efforts in 2021 will focus on the final push to end the pandemic and get the world back on the path to achieve the United Nations Global Goals.
