Actress, singer, and Global Citizen Champion Selena Gomez participated in the #SafeHands Challenge on Saturday, the viral hygiene challenge taking the internet by storm amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Created by the World Health Organization (WHO), the #SafeHands Challenge aims to highlight the importance of good hygiene practices to help protect people against coronavirus.

The challenge encourages people to post videos of themselves washing their hands according to WHO guidelines on social media.

One of the most practical measures people can take to protect themself against the coronavirus is handwashing, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who helped to launch the #SafeHands Challenge on March 13.

While the actual handwashing should last at least 20 seconds, the whole process could take up to 40 to 60 seconds total.

Nominated by Thrive Global CEO and Huffington Post Founder Arianna Huffington, Gomez posted two videos of herself completing the challenge on Instagram on Saturday.

In the clips, she thoroughly washes her hands, following WHO and CDC guidelines, and explains what she is doing every step of the way.

"I clearly wasn't washing my hands the right way," Gomez said in the first video.

Revealing that she is at home with her dog and her grandmother, she properly scrubs and rinses her hands, making sure to turn off the faucet with a paper towel and not her bare hands.

After completing the challenge, Gomez nominates the #SafeHands Challenge’s next contenders, calling on three fellow celebrities to post their handwashing videos on social media.

"I want to challenge three amazing, more powerful women. Gigi Hadid, Olivia Wilde, and my girl Cardi," Gomez said in the second clip.

So far, only Olivia Wilde has responded to Gomez’s nomination and participated in the challenge.
