Why Global Citizens Should Care
Music has the power to bring people together — this is the very idea behind the Global Citizen movement. With 10 years to the deadline of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, it is vital that the world join together to achieve these goals and end extreme poverty by 2030. Join Global Citizen and take action now on issues including the climate crisis, education access, and inequality.

From Usher’s performance honoring Prince, to Demi Lovato’s moving set, to Common’s part in the final act of the show, Global Citizens on stage at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday did not disappoint.

With the news of basketball star Kobe Bryant’s death arriving just hours before the show, a sadness hung over the night that host Alicia Keys addressed in a performance with Boyz II Men as a small tribute to kick off the event.

As Global Citizen embarks on its largest campaign yet, Global Goal Live: The Possible Dream, we’re reminded of the importance of music as a vital platform for unity in the world.

“Music is that one language we all know how to speak,” Keys said.

We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations to all of the Global Citizens that took home Grammy Awards on Sunday.

1. Lizzo

By the time Lizzo opened the show with her incredible performance of “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts,” she had already won two Grammys during the non-televised premiere ceremony — one for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe), and one for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jerome.”

Later in the evening, the new Global Citizen — who’s one of the literally dozens of world-leading artists already announced as being part of Global Citizen Live: The Possible Dream this year — took home Best Pop Solo Performance.

2. Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish performed the beautiful “When the Party’s Over” after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Eilish, at just 18 years old, went on to win Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year.

Like Lizzo, Eilish is also already part of the incredible lineup of artists who are going to be performing at Global Goal Live events around the world. You can find out all about the Global Goal Live campaign here, and stay tuned for more announcements.

3. John Legend

Another Global Citizen favorite, John Legend won Best Rap/Sung Performance for his part in “Higher” by DJ Khaled, featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend.

Legend has been an active Global Citizen ambassador for a number of years, having performed at the Global Citizen Festival in 2013 and 2018, as well as working on a Global Citizen campaign to end cash bail in New York, and most recently acting as a host and performer at Global Citizen Prize 2019 in London.

4. Beyoncé

Last but certainly not least, Beyoncé won the award for Best Music Film for Homecoming.

Beyoncé took centerstage alongside JAY-Z at the Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, in December 2018. The festival saw over $7 billion made in commitments — enough to impact 121 million lives — and you can find out how the actions taken by Global Citizens ahead of the event are already changing lives here.

Global Goal Live: The Possible Dream will culminate on Sept. 26, 2020, with a historic 10-hour global broadcast spanning across five continents — making it the largest live advocacy broadcast event in history.

We already have some incredible artists in the lineup, with the event to feature appearances by Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Coldplay, Cyndi Lauper, D’banj, Eddie Vedder, Exo, H.E.R., Janelle Monáe, Lizzo, Metallica, Miley Cyrus, Muse, Ozuna, Ozzy Osbourne, Pharrell Williams, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shawn Mendes, Tiwa Savage, Usher, and more.
