Trees are the lungs of the planet and the heart of our ecosystems – they remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and are a haven for biodiversity.
As the climate crisis worsens, we need them to help stabilize and protect our world more than ever. But instead, the US has the fourth highest rate of deforestation in the world, and has lost 75% of its natural forests.
We have to reverse this trend and start protecting and restoring forests in the US and around the world. This is why Global Citizen is calling for 1 billion trees to be protected and planted around the world by 2022, and why US congressional leaders are calling for 1 billion trees to be planted domestically by 2030.
By acting on these proposals, President Biden and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry can ensure the US takes concrete action to defend nature and tackle climate change.
