The decisions we make now – on COVID-19, on climate change, on equality and injustice – will affect generations to come.
In 2020 the world experienced the most significant pandemic of our generation. Whilst everyone has been affected, not everyone has been affected equally. The world’s poorest countries have been devastated economically and socially by the pandemic’s impacts — new estimates show 160 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty due to the crisis.
We cannot let this happen. Despite COVID-19’s destructive path, we must make sure the legacy of our response is one of unity, not huge inequality.
If we don’t act now, everyone, everywhere will be worse off. The world desperately needs a plan to help support a global recovery from this pandemic if we are to get back on track for a fairer and more equal world for all.
We’ve selected the five most urgent challenges the world needs to act on for a future free from poverty: end the pandemic, protect our planet, eliminate hunger, tackle inequality and defend every child’s right to an education.
But to make progress on any of these challenges we need the support of the world’s most powerful decision makers – from world leaders to philanthropists and corporations.
Global Citizen is calling on those with the power to make a difference, to be on the right side of history, by pledging funding and relief where it's needed most. Wealthy governments have spent trillions on their domestic plans against COVID-19 – we need just a fraction of that to make a huge difference to the future of our planet.
