Alex Nguyen

VIETNAM

Alex Nguyễn is a Vietnamese writer and cultural practitioner. Through her work, Nguyễn amplifies the voices of marginalized communities, particularly ethnic minorities and young women, using a mix of journalism, photography, video, and audio to uncover untold stories. As co-founder of the Thì Collective, she collaborates with her multimedia artist partner to explore social issues through creative forms. "Art is an instrument to evoke human sentiments about life," Nguyễn said, describing it as a powerful tool to address environmental and social challenges, especially in Vietnam’s constrained civic space.

For the program, Nguyễn chose to showcase a portrait series of women from disadvantaged groups she encountered early in her career. These portraits reflect their professions, struggles, and resilience in facing economic instability, climate change, and gender inequality. "The majority are from ethnic minority groups across Vietnam," she shared, adding that her focus on women’s stories stems from her own experiences as a mother and wife navigating complex issues. “Working with them inspires and connects me, as I empathize with their perseverance and solutions.”
