We are calling on all of our partners and allies to join Global Citizen and UNFPA on the road to ending the unmet need for family planning and to help unlock the UNFPA Challenge Fund, announced at Global Citizen Live in Paris to mobilize an additional $50 million in financial and in-kind commitments towards UNFPA.

Global Citizen & UNFPA Partnership

Global Citizen has partnered with UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, to provide emergency support for the UNFPA Supplies Partnership, the flagship programme for the provision of lifesaving commodities (e.g. modern contraceptives, maternal health medicines, feminine hygiene products), services, and support to over 20 million women and girls in some of the most vulnerable situations worldwide.

THE NEED: The UNFPA Supplies Partnership is facing a funding gap of $150 million due to recently announced budget cuts by donor countries and a reprioritization of health funding as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This shortfall is threatening its ability to meet reproductive health needs in half the 48 low-income countries it supports, fourteen of which are hosting refugees or facing conflict or a humanitarian crisis. In some countries, contraceptive stocks are running out.

THE OPPORTUNITY: Global Citizen Live Paris (September 25th, 2021) saw the creation of the “UNFPA Challenge Fund” of up to $50 million, launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and a private foundation to provide emergency support to UNFPA Supplies Partnership.

As part of this campaign, there are matching and visibility opportunities available for companies, philanthropists, and foundations who are stepping up and committing resources to ensure women and girls are empowered with choice.

THE IMPACT: For every $1 that a woman or girl invests in modern contraception, there is an immediate saving of $3 in maternal health costs and an estimated $120 return on investment through savings on health care,  increasing women’s participation in employment and raising their lifetime earning potential. The ROI is clear.

Through a fully-funded UNFPA Supplies Partnership, together we can avert 14.6 million unintended pregnancies and 250,000 maternal and child deaths in the most left-behind countries and communities.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Global Citizen and UNFPA will be taking action to support gender equality and promote women’s bodily autonomy - particularly in the context of the 16 Days of Activism for Gender Based Violence (November  25th - December 10) - an important annual advocacy moment for leadership to combat gender-based violence and support women’s health and rights.
