Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the Global Citizen Festival

What is Global Citizen?

We’re an advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty by 2030. We do this by encouraging people to learn and take action on our platform. These actions apply pressure on world leaders to make commitments around the issues associated with extreme poverty: gender equality, food security, education, the environment, global health, citizenship, and sanitation.

We don't ask people for money, but to take action to end extreme poverty. These actions can be as simple as a tweet, signing a petition, making a phone call, or sending an email.

By taking action, these Global Citizens are rewarded with the opportunity to win tickets to our music festivals and other events around the world.

So far, more than 22 million actions have been taken by Global Citizens, leading to $37 billion commitments being made by world leaders, which are set to affect 2.25 billion lives by 2030.

What is the Global Citizen Festival?

The Global Citizen Festival is a music festival where fans take actions to end extreme poverty in order to earn free tickets.

This concert is timed to coincide with the UN General Assembly to leverage opportunities to get policy and financial commitments from government, corporate and philanthropic leaders. Tickets to the festival are awarded through points earned by taking actions to fight extreme poverty, such as signing petitions, calling your congressperson, and more.

The inaugural Global Citizen Festival took place on September 29, 2012 with 60,000 in attendance on the Great Lawn in New York’s iconic Central Park. The festival featured live performances by Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Band of Horses, K’Naan and more. Since then, artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, and many more have performed on the Global Citizen Festival stage.

Where and when is the 2019 Global Citizen Festival?

This year’s Global Citizen Festival New York is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, in NYC’s Central Park on the Great Lawn. The gates at Central Park will open at 2 p.m. and the show will start at 5 p.m.

Who are the artists involved in the 2019 Festival?

This year’s lineup includes Queen + Adam Lambert, Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, OneRepublic, H.E.R, and Carole King. Our special guests include French Montana, Ben Platt, Jon Batiste and Stay Human.

Our hosts are Deborra-lee Furness and Hugh Jackman.

Additional co-hosts will be announced soon!

How does the festival help end extreme poverty?

Global Citizen believes in the power of advocacy. Rather than ask individuals to contribute money to support specific programs on the ground, we work with world leaders and the private sector to make large financial commitments to support key issues like girls education, building toilets, robust foreign aid programs, and more. Global Citizens take actions to earn their way into the festival. These actions tell leaders the changes we want to see in the world.

The festival celebrates the progress and commitments Global Citizens have made over the last 10 years while also identifying issues that need additional progress. Showing up in person helps us hold ourselves and others accountable for the work we have to do to end extreme poverty by 2030.

Where can I sign-up to be a part of the initiative?

You can visit www.globalcitizenfestival.com to learn more and download the Global Citizen app. You can only take action to gain entry to the festival through the Global Citizen app, available in the Apple and Android app stores if you search “Global Citizen”. First, register to become a Global Citizen, which opens your account.

Then you can start taking actions like signing petitions, taking quizzes, sending emails, and calling representatives to help end extreme poverty.

Questions about actions

How can I earn tickets to Global Citizen Festival?

You can earn tickets to the festival by taking action on the Global Citizen app to help end extreme poverty.

Starting July 30, Global Citizens will have four different opportunities to earn points toward earning tickets. This year’s actions are organized along four mission-driven themes: health, education, gender equality and the environment.

When you take action, you’ll earn festival points which can go toward earning a pair of tickets. After taking a series of actions, you’ll be eligible to redeem your points and be entered into a ticket draw.

Keep an eye on your inbox, turn your push notifications for our app, and follow our social media accounts (@glblctzn) for all of the latest news and updates.

How and when will I find out if I earned tickets?

At the end of each ticket draw, we’ll notify winners via email. Winners will have 48 hours to claim their tickets. Add our email, festival@globalcitizen.org, to your “known senders” and check your spam folder to see if you received an email from us.

Winners will be notified on Aug. 12, Aug. 26, Sept. 9, Sept. 16 and Sept. 22.

Can I use my existing points to enter into the festival draw?

We appreciate all of the actions you take on Global Citizen but only points earned through festival actions will be eligible for festival tickets. Make sure you complete festival actions in the mobile app and earn the necessary festival points to enter the draw.

I don’t have the Global Citizen app. Can I still take actions for the festival?

To take actions that will earn you points for the Global Citizen Festival, you must download the app and take action there. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms here.

As always, you can find opportunities to get involved and earn other rewards at https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/ using any device.

I have the Global Citizen app, but don’t see actions for the festival. Why?

While everyone around the world can participate in taking action to end extreme poverty, only Global Citizens who’ve taken the festival actions and live in the US or Canada can enter to win tickets.

How do you track the actions people take, especially actions such as calling a representative?

When you’re logged in to your Global Citizen profile, our system keeps track of the actions you take and assigns you points once you complete the action.

How do I take the call action?

You will have to take the call action through the app from your cell phone. When you push the button to take the action, our system will call your phone and connect you with your representative’s office. Don't worry, the call is free and it allows us to confirm you have made the phone call and award you your points.

What if the voice mailbox is full? Do I have to take the action again?

Yes. You will not get points for the action until it’s complete.

Why don’t my tweets count for points this year? Do these actions still matter?

Tweet actions are still incredibly helpful in getting world leaders to make commitments that help end world poverty. However, due to Twitter policy, we can no longer incentivize tweets with points. We still encourage you to spread the word on social media, but you will no longer get reward points.

Global Citizen Partners

Who does Global Citizen work with to create the festival?

Ending extreme poverty is a big challenge. We believe it takes the collaboration of citizens, businesses, non-profits, and the government to help solve the issues that keep people in poverty. Global Citizen works as an advocacy platform, and we work with  partners that align around important initiatives and campaigns. These partners share our vision for a world free of extreme poverty, and also provide us with funding to support those efforts.

Who are the Global Citizen Festival partners this year?

The 2019 festival is presented by Citibank and Cisco, with support from MSNBC/Comcast, iHeart Media, Live Nation, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Verizon, and the NYC Parks Department.

Can I sell my Global Citizen Festival tickets?

Tickets are free but cannot be sold on a secondary market for any reason. We know people at all of the big reselling sites, and they’ve agreed to take down any of these tickets. On our side, we’ll cancel any advertised tickets, so if you buy them, you won’t be able to get into the show.
We’ve set out the rules in the Terms & Conditions and will remove people who break the rules from all draws.

Can I transfer my tickets to someone else?

Yes! Once you receive the ticket link, you can easily assign them to another name via Ticketmaster. Here’s how to transfer tickets:

  1. Log into your Ticketmaster account, and go into ‘My Tickets’
  2. Find your pair of Global Citizen Festival tickets, and use the ‘Ticket Transfer’ option to transfer tickets to your friend or family member’s name.

Please note this will only be available after Sept. 20.

What happens if I win more than one pair of tickets?

Congratulations! Thank you for being a great Global Citizen. If you win a second time, this has no effect on your first pair of tickets. Feel free to transfer (information here) the other pair to a friend, family member, neighbor, or colleague.

I only need one of my tickets. Can I give the other one to another Global Citizen?

Yes! If you need help finding a friend for the day of the show, check out our Global Citizen Facebook group here.

Both of my tickets have my name on them. Is that OK?

Yes, your guest will still be able to get into the festival if your name is on their ticket.

Do I need to show a matching ID at the gate?

No, you don’t need a matching ID at the gate.

Do I need to print my tickets?

We have plenty of recycling stations throughout the park for you to recycle your paper tickets, once you’ve entered!

Security at Global Citizen

What is the security screening like?

The safety and security of every attendee of Global Citizen Festivals is our top concern. Every person attending the festival can expect a thorough screening (similar to airport-style) at the gates. Be sure to review the list of prohibited items to learn what is and isn’t allowed in the park to make the screening process move as quickly as possible. Please allow plenty of time to get through security as the process may take longer. Bags that are 12” x 6” x 12” and smaller,  and single-pocket drawstring bags are permitted. Bags exceeding this size will be turned away prior to screening.

What is the setup at the Great Lawn in Central Park this year?

We’ve enhanced flow for this year’s festival, and attendees of past festivals who come this year will notice that the Great Lawn will be even more open than in past years, with large, free-flowing spaces. This means it will be even easier to meet up with friends and access our great partner activations.

Attendees will also notice enhanced lighting and signage for exit paths outside of the park. When you get into the park, make sure you are aware of the nearest exit. There will be trained staff throughout the Great Lawn to help direct you and find your way around the festival grounds (bathroom, merch, exits).

Getting Involved

I am not able to attend the festival this year. How can I follow along during the day?

All of our Global Citizens are with us at the festival in spirit. If you’d like to follow along with the action of the day, the event will be broadcasted live on MSNBC (US), and on Global Citizen’s YouTube and Twitter channels. iHeart Radio will also carry an audio broadcast of the Festival. You can tune in starting at 4 p.m. EST across all channels.

We would love to connect with you on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @glblctzn.

Where can I apply for a press pass?

How can I volunteer at the festival?

How can I be more sustainable at the festival?

You can arrive by public transit or bike, bring a reusable plastic bottle for water refill stations, properly dispose of your waste at our Eco Hub waste stations, and participate in our recycling incentive program (and exchange those materials for merch!).
