Over the last six years, millions of Global Citizens around the world took over 11 million actions to solve the world's biggest challenges. That's 11 million emails, tweets, petition signatures and phone calls targeting world leaders to end extreme poverty by 2030. To date, the actions by our global community have resulted in over $30 billion in commitments and policy announcements that will affect the lives of 1 billion people by 2030.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the Global Citizen Festival

What is Global Citizen?

We are an advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty by 2030. We do this by encouraging people to learn and take action on our platform; those actions apply pressure on world leaders to make commitments around the issues associated with extreme poverty: gender equality, food security, education, the environment, global health, citizenship, and sanitation.

We don't ask people for money, but to take action to end extreme poverty. These actions can be as simple as a tweet, signing a petition, making a phone call, or sending an email.

By taking action, these Global Citizens are rewarded with access and tickets to our music festivals and other events around the world.

So far, more than 15 million actions have been taken by Global Citizens, leading to $37 billion commitments being made by world leaders, which are set to affect 2.25 billion lives by 2030.

What is the Global Citizen Festival?

The Global Citizen Festival is an action-rewarded, awareness-driven, free music festival where fans engage with causes in order to win tickets.

On Sept. 29, 2012, more than 60,000 people attended the first Global Citizen Festival on the Great Lawn in New York’s iconic Central Park. The festival featured live performances by Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Band of Horses, K’Naan and more. Since then, artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé, JAY-Z, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, and many more have performed on the Global Citizen Festival stage. Tickets to the festival are accessed through points earned by taking actions to fight extreme poverty, such as signing petitions, sending tweets, calling your congressperson, and more. This concert is timed to coincide with the UN General Assembly to raise awareness and leverage government aid.

Where and when is the 2018 Global Citizen Festival?

This year’s Global Citizen Festival New York is taking place on Sept. 29, 2018, in NYC’s Central Park on the Great Lawn.

Who are the artists involved in this year’s Festival?

This year’s lineup includes Janet Jackson, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, Cardi B and Janelle Monáe. John Legend will be giving a special guest performance and Deborra-lee Furness and Hugh Jackman will return as hosts for the 5th year.

Our host committee includes Kal Penn, Danai Gurira, Rachel Brosnahan, Forest Whitaker, Gus Kenworthy, La La Anthony, Camren Bicondova, Cynthia Erivo and more to be announced.

How does the festival help end extreme poverty?

Global Citizen believes in the power of advocacy. Rather than ask individuals to contribute money to support specific programs on the ground, we work with world leaders to make large financial commitments to support things like girls education, building toilets, robust foreign aid programs, and more. Global Citizens take actions to earn their way into the festival. These actions tell leaders the changes we want to see in the world.

Where can I sign-up to be a part of the initiative?

Fans can visit to learn more and download the Global Citizen app. You can only take action to gain entry to the festival through the Global Citizen app. First, register to become a Global Citizen, which opens your account. Then you can start taking actions like signing petitions, sending tweets, sharing information on your social media channels about issues affecting the world’s poor, sending emails to world leaders, and more.

Questions about actions

How do users win tickets through their participation?

Users win tickets to the festival through taking action to end extreme poverty. All of this year’s actions for the festival will take place in the Global Citizen app. You can choose from a range of actions that earn you points. For the first festival journey, once you earn 24 points from festival actions, you can enter the draw for festival tickets. Every two weeks we will announce ticket winners and launch a new campaign with a different challenge for global citizens to solve. Each journey will require a different level of points to be earned by taking action.

How does a user enter the lottery and when will they find out if they’ve won?

To enter the lottery for festival tickets in the first action journey, users must take enough actions to earn 24 points, and then redeem them in the app for an entry into the draw. Winners will be informed via email when the draw is made.

Can I use my existing points to enter into the festival draw?

No. Only points earned through festival actions will be eligible for tickets. If you use existing points earned from previous action taking your entry will not be eligible. Make sure you complete festival actions in the mobile app and earn the necessary festival points to enter the draw.

I don’t have the Global Citizen app. Can I still take actions for the festival?

To take actions that will earn you points for the Global Citizen Festival, you must download the app and take action there. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms. Just search Global Citizen.

I have the Global Citizen app, but don’t see actions for the festival. Why?

The Global Citizen Festival actions for the festival in New York City are only available to people located in the United States and Canada.

What if I do not have a Twitter account? How do I take the tweet actions?

You will have to set up a Twitter account in order to take the tweet actions.

How do I take the call action?

You will have to take the call action from your cell phone.

What if the voice mailbox is full? Do I have to take the action again?

Yes — you will not get points for the action until it is complete.

How do you track the actions people take, especially actions such as calling a representative? How do you know someone has actually placed a call?

The actions are tracked through the Global Citizen online platform and mobile app. Once a participant takes an action, for example, signing a petition, the points are registered to their Global Citizen profile. Through the mobile app, we are able to track, with the same technology, when a participant makes a call to their representative’s office.

Global Citizen Partners

Who does Global Citizen work with to create the festival?

If we are to achieve the global goals, it’s going to take the collective efforts of civil society, the private sector and NGOs. Global Citizen works as a campaigning platform to bring these partners together and align them collectively around important campaigns. These partners not only support our campaigning efforts but very often fund them.

In 2018, Global Citizen is working with a number of partners, all of which you can view here.

The festival is presented by Citibank, with support from MSNBC/Comcast, Live Nation, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, CHIME FOR CHANGE founded by Gucci, Verizon, House of Mandela, iHeartRadio, and the NYC Parks Department.

Questions about tickets

How many free tickets will you be giving out to the Global Citizen Festival?

We will draw 24,000 winners – each winner then has 72 hours to claim two tickets. A total of 48,000 free tickets will be distributed to the 2018 Global Citizen Festival in NYC.

When are prize draws for tickets to Global Citizen Festival?

We will give away 48,000 free tickets to the 2018 Global Citizen Festival in NYC. Prize draws will be held on:

  • Aug. 21: at least 9,840 double passes will be drawn
  • Sept. 4: at least 9,020 double passes will be drawn
  • Sept. 18: at least 1,200 double passes will be drawn
  • Sept. 24: at least 410 double passes will be drawn

These dates are subject to change. Note: Though we are holding four drawings, there is only one place to enter for tickets throughout (

How will Global Citizen prevent these tickets from winding up on the secondary market?

We know that most of you will work hard to fairly earn and win your tickets as Global Citizens who are committed to ending extreme poverty by 2030. But, some people will cheat. We’ve clearly set out the rules in the terms & conditions, and will remove people who break the rules from all draws. To minimize this we have set up a ticket delivery delay which means you won’t be able to receive tickets until 72 hours before the show. If anyone does try to sell any of the FREE tickets, it won’t work. We know people at all of the big reselling sites, and they’ve agreed to take down any of these tickets. On our side, we’ll cancel them – so if you buy them, you won’t be able to get into the show.

How do I buy VIP tickets?

VIP tickets are available through our ticketing partner Ticketmaster. Go here for more info.

Questions about the Global Citizen Festival event

What time do the gates to Central Park open? What time does the festival start and end?

The gates to the Great Lawn open at 2 p.m. The festival is projected to begin at 4 p.m., and end by 10 p.m.

What are the set times or order the artists are playing?

We will not be releasing set times or the order of artists. With the amazing lineup, get there early to enjoy the whole show!

What is prohibited from Central Park?

The following items and actions are prohibited from the park: backpacks, bicycles or scooters, blankets, camelBaks backpacks, chains/chain wallets, cameras larger than point-and-shot (if you can remove the lens don’t bring it), chairs, coolers, fireworks, flags, frisbees, glass/metal containers (including reusable water bottles such as Swells), illegal drugs/ paraphernalia, laser pens or similar focused light, lighters, musical instruments, pets/animals, selfie sticks, skateboards, smoking, sports balls, tents, tripods, umbrellas, unlicensed vending of any kind, weapons, video recording equipment, water squirt guns.

Please note, as per ADA regulations, Service Animals are permitted on the premises. In addition, those who require seating due to a disability should proceed to the ADA Accessibility section where seating will be provided as needed.

Will there be food/drink sold at the festival?

Yes, there will be food and drink vendors but no alcohol is permitted on the Great Lawn so there will not be any for sale. Water refill stations will be provided at no cost to you.

Where is the exact location we should enter the park? My ticket only says West or East gate.

We have two main general admission entrances to the Global Citizen Festival. The West Gate is located at 72nd Street and Central Park West and the East Gate is located at 72nd Street and 5th Avenue. Remember that you will be cordoned off into pens once you are on the Great Lawn so it’s important to arrive with your friends!

Where is the Premier and Global ticket entrance?

Premier and Global VIP ticket guests can enter at West 81st Street and Central Park West.

Where is the ADA/handicapped accessible entrance?

East 84th Street and Central Park East.

Both of my tickets have my name on them. Is that OK?

Yes! Please make sure you enter the festival with your guest.

What if I earned a second pair of tickets and both have my name on them?

If you were lucky enough to win a second pair of Global Citizen Festival tickets, and you are giving them to a friend or family member, please log into your Ticketmaster account, and go into ‘My Tickets’. Find the second pair of Global Citizen Festival tickets, and use the ‘Ticket Transfer’ option to transfer tickets to your friend or family member’s name. Please note this will only be available after Sept. 20.

I think I earned tickets during two different prize draws. Is that possible?

You can only enter each ticket draw once, but you can enter ticket draws for more than one Action Journey, so it’s entirely possible to win more than once. If you win a second time, this has no effect on your first pair of tickets. Just use the Ticketmaster ‘Ticket Transfer’ option to change the name on the second pair to whoever it is you give them to.

If I arrive at the Festival a few hours after my friends and want to meet up with them, will this be difficult?

Yes. We strongly suggest arriving at the festival with the person/people you are attending with. People will be sectioned off in pens on the Great Lawn according to their time of arrival, and will not be able to move around between pens.

I have a baby and want to bring her/him. Does she/he need a ticket?

Yes! Everyone entering the park, regardless of age, will need a ticket.
