What if I told you that, in some places, it's easier to start a company than get a library card?

Some of you might be thinking "Great! We need to make it easier for people to open businesses and drive local economies."

While it's undoubtably true that we need partners in business to realize our dream of ending poverty by 2030, this women is shining a light on one of the most distressing developments of the modern age: anonymous companies who steal, evade tax, traffic drugs and loot billions from some of the world’s poorest countries.

Charmian Gooch, co-founder and director of Global Witness, is the 2014 TED award winner. Her organization is on the front line in the fight to ensure that people like you and me know how companies are spending our money.

This will be one of the defining challenges of our time. If we make strides against corporations and businesses using the money we spend to keep people poor, we will have make huge progress in battle against extreme poverty.
