There are more young people in the world today than ever before. 1.8 billion people -- a quarter of our population – are between the ages of 10 and 24.

Yet, governments around the world aren’t prioritizing the rights and needs of youth. That’s why we’ve recently joined forces with the United Nations Population Fund to call for bigger and better investment in the rights of young people everywhere.

The Issue

Millions of young people, especially girls, don’t have access to basic needs such as education, health services, contraception, comprehensive sexuality education, protection from violence, and access to decent work.

What’s more, most young people around the world aren’t represented in the global decisions that directly impact their lives. When young people don’t have a say in their future, they face higher barriers to reach their full potential and contribute fully to their communities.

Did you know that 515 million young people live on less than $2 US dollars a day? That 175 million people under 25 can’t read a full sentence? That over 74 million youth are unemployed?

We have an enormous opportunity in 2015 to change this.

In 2015, world leaders will create the roadmap for development for the next fifteen years. This roadmap, called the Post-2015 Development Agenda, will address some of the most critical and urgent issues of our time: climate change, health, gender equality and human rights. In each of these areas, young people stand to gain and lose the most.

What have Global Citizens done?

#Showyourselfie is a petition with a difference. Your selfie is your personal signature, demonstrating support for the world’s youth to be recognized, for world leaders to address the six key issues that today’s young people face, and for youth voices to be heard by decision-makers.

We've already received the support of almost 7,000 people from around the world, including Ban Ki-moon, Malala Yousafzai, actress Dianna AgronandTiësto, who all believe that young people should be at the heart of the future international development framework.

By submitting their photo, supporters of #showyourselfie signed their visual petition and showed world leaders that they want significant investment in young people.

Where do we go from here?

#Showyourselfie will mobilize millions of young people and those who support them to show world leaders that the needs and rights of young people must be a priority.

Over the next year we will build a groundbreaking visual petition - made up of millions of selfies - to demonstrate global support for youth and call for bigger and better investment in their rights.

In September 2015 will will hand-over this visual petition to Member States of the United Nations in an immense visual gallery during the United Nations General Assembly. We will call on all Member States to show their selfie in support and invest in young people.

At this crucial stage in the development of the world, we cannot allow the next generation to be ignored. It’s time to show governments that they must tackle the vast range of issues facing today’s youth.

Join #showyourselfie and submit your visual petition on www.showyourselfie.org today!
