Global education is at a critical junction. While some important progress has been made, there are still 126 million boys and girls around the world who are missing out on primary and secondary school completely, and 250 million more are attending school but failing to learn the basics.
Children without an education are denied the right to achieve their full potential, and are left vulnerable to violence, poverty, discrimination, early marriage and early, unplanned parenthood. At the same time, international funding for education has been steadily declining since 2010.
The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is a unique organisation that brings together developing countries with donor governments to tackle this crisis. By focusing on 59 priority countries, and by working on critical issues such as education in conflict affected states, girls’ education, improving countries’ basic literacy and numeracy, and improving teacher effectiveness, the GPE has helped get 22 million more children into school and learning – that’s incredible.
In June the GPE will be asking governments to commit $3.5 billion for its next round of funding from 2015-2018. We’re proud to say that the UK Government has been a major supporter of the fund, providing up to 25% of all the GPE’s funding, and we are now asking them to take the lead again.
Write to Learn is calling on the UK Government to maintain its commitment to the incredible work of the GPE by providing £525 million in funding. Not only will this help push other countries into supporting the GPE, it will also directly help 29 million more children to get an education.
Take action today and send an email to the UK government asking them to be world leaders once more.
