Streaming:

1. “Where to Invade Next,” on Hulu, Documentary

Michael Moore — native of Flint, Michigan, and documentary filmmaker — travels around the world in an ironic effort to “invade” different countries with American values, only to find that the “American Dream” he hopes to impose on others is more alive in places like Finland and Slovenia than it is in the US itself. In this tongue-in-cheek documentary, Moore makes his way from prisons in Norway to cafeterias in France, painting an optimistic picture of progressive politics across Europe.

2. “America Divided,” on Hulu, Series

A much-needed reflection on inequality in the United States, this documentary series relies on high-profile correspondents (actors, artists, musicians) to uncover the roots of a range of social issues, from mass incarceration to local politics. It features Amy Poehler, of NBC’s “Parks and Rec,” the rapper Common, and actor Zach Galifianakis, among others.

3. “Kiruna-Kigali,” on Amazon Prime, Short Film

Clocking in at just 15 minutes, this Oscar-nominated short film portrays the struggles two women face in the minutes before they give birth — one in Rwanda and the other in Sweden. Required viewing for anyone who has, or hasn’t, given birth.

4. “America Recycled,” on Google Play, Documentary

Two brothers hop on rusted, recycled bikes and seek out the “American Dream” while riding across the US South. Hoping to escape what they perceive as the unbridled consumerism and capitalist excess of middle-class America, they find something else altogether on their way from North Carolina to California.

In theaters:

The Salesman,” Drama, R

“The Salesman” is a gripping Iranian drama within a drama. The movie, which was nominated for an Academy Award for this year’s Best Foreign-Language Film, follows two actors in a Tehran-based performance of “Death of a Salesman” as they confront a series of upsetting real-life dramas and try to keep their personal lives together.
