Each week, streaming sites like Netflix, HBO, and Amazon release a whole spate of new movies for us to gobble up.

As the holiday season kicks into swing, finding time to watch a movie can be tough. But one of the best antidotes to holiday mania can be to snuggle up and watch a film, or turn your phone off and take in a movie at the theater.

Global Citizen has scoured the endless landscape of TV, movies, and streaming services to find the best things for you to watch. Check back every week as we present the latest and best offerings for you to enjoy.

Streaming

The Trans List” on HBO

“The Trans List” profiles 11 people who identify as trans and nonbinary by letting them tell their own stories. If you like this film, check out producer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ other work profiling marginalized communities, such as “The Black List,” “The Latino List,” and “The Out List.” You can stream this hour-long documentary on HBO Go.

When Two Worlds Collide” on Netflix

Over the past several months, the struggle over the Dakota Access Pipeline has regularly made the news thanks to indigenous resistance and collective struggle. This film documents when a similar situation played out in Peru in 2007 when President Alan Garcia’s plan to extract oil, minerals, and natural gas from protected lands was met by resistance from indigenous communities led by Alberto Pizango.

Years of Living Dangerously” on Yahoo

Celebrities talking seriously about global warming — sound familiar, Leo DiCaprio? This series, told by celebrities from Matt Damon to Jessica Alba and produced in part by Arnold Schwarzenegger, considers some of the greatest environmental and health challenges facing the world.

As I Open My Eyes” on Google Play

A young, Tunisian girl with a rebellious streak finds her voice during the Arab Spring in this fictionalized account. Young Farah’s fledgling artistic path intersects with the culture of fear and repression that surrounded the events in the Middle East in the early 2010s.

Desert Migration” on Amazon

This film about life after HIV/AIDS bends the documentary genre through creative storytelling devices and beautiful shots. These men were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS before an effective AIDS treatment had been developed, only to find out later they might have a greater chance to beat the illness.

Babies” on Netflix

Four babies, four countries, one documentary. This film turns its focus to an extremely formative part of our development, begging the question: how does how we’re raised affect who we become?

In theaters:

Jackie - R

Natalie Portman has taken on an ambitious role in the new film Jackie. Blindsided by a tragedy that shocked the nation, Jacqueline Kennedy must figure out how to move forward as the widow of one of the United States’ most beloved presidents during a time when civil rights were all but guaranteed to minorities in the US.
