Uganda’s parliament has suspended its meetings until a series of murders of women are properly investigated by senior government officials. 

A total of 20 women have been found brutally killed in the capital city of Kampala since June, raising speculation about a serial killer, according to the Associated Press. Police have so far insisted that there is no evidence yet that the crimes are connected.

“We have no business in this house until we get information on why our women are being killed,” said opposition lawmaker Odonga Otto to Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper.

“The whole world wants to know why these women are dying. Women are being killed every day and the police do not appear confident when communicating who is responsible for the killings.”

The speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, at the end of August tasked the ministers for security and internal affairs to present a report on why women are being targeted, according to the AllAfrica news website.

But when the ministers failed to show up to present the report at the parliamentary session on Tuesday, Otto moved a motion to suspend parliament until the government explained the killings, according to the Daily Monitor.

The motion overwhelmingly passed a vote. 

“It is so saddening that we have not got the actual suspects,” State Minister for Primary Education Rosemary Seninde said. The manner in which some of the women are being killed is very terrible and humiliating to those of us who see them,” Seninde said.

Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye said on Wednesday that there is no evidence yet of a serial killer, and that police are still investigating. 

Local media have reported that many of the women were sexually assaulted before being killed, and that many of the women were strangled.

The most recent of the women was killed on Monday, with her body being found at a car washing bay in a city suburb, according to All Africa.

According to police, a suspect, a man found hiding at a shrine, in the case was arrested on Tuesday.
