It’s safe to say that the Nepalese have gone through a lot this year. In April, a massive earthquake left thousands dead and parts of the region in ruins. And today, ongoing protests over a new constitution, border blockages, and fuel shortages are hindering the country’s ability to get back on its feet.

But this week, Nepal gets to shine a little brighter during a much needed celebration. Yesterday marked the beginning of Tihar, Nepal's 5-day Festival of Lights that acknowledges the connection between all living things on earth. Festival participants spend each day honoring a different entity, and TODAY'S guest of honor is none other than man's best friend!

Dog-lovers rejoice because today is the day you get to stare at "feel-good" pictures of your favorite furry friends getting showered with love. During Kukur Tihar, or the second day of Tihar, all dogs in Nepal (even strays) are pampered from head to paw.

This loyal companion is draped with a beautiful floral necklace, a mark of respect and dignity.

All dogs are given a red mark on their fuzzy foreheads, otherwise known as the tika.

Nepal's Hindu practitioners believe that dogs guard the gates of the afterlife. I really, really hope so.

I think this one had one too many treats.

No dog is too young to be worshipped during Kukur Tihar.

Or too wrinkly.

While some dogs may get "carried away" during the celebrations...

...this day is a special reminder to have love and appreciation for all living things.
