Matalan announced last night (24th September 2013) that they are to sign the Bangladeshi Fire and Safety Accord. One of the remaining British High Street retailers to do so, Matalan signed the agreement after extensive pressure from thousands of Global Citizens.

Stephen Brown, UK Country Director, said:

"We're delighted that Matalan has followed Arcadia and River Island and signed the Bangladeshi Fire and Safety Accord. Since our ‘See Through Fashion' campaign launched last week, we've now seen three of Britain's biggest retailers listen to our, and our partners, calls to put people before profit.

Nearly 6 months have passed since over 1100 people died in the tragic Rana Plaza disaster. It is completely unacceptable that some British companies refuse be held legally accountable for unsafe working conditions.

This victory just shows the power that consumers have. Thousands of River Island customers engaged in the issue and sent hundreds of letters to the CEO, sending tweets and posting Facebook messages calling on them to sign the accord. What's vital now is that we build on this momentum and pressurise Peacocks and Sports Direct to follow suit".

Next Target

The See Through Fashion campaign has now has its sights set on Peacocks, who have yet to make any move towards signing the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord. With the dedicated action of the Global Citizens, the See Through Fashion campaign is upping the intensity to achieve another success for workers rights in Bangladesh in the coming weeks
