Today the world gains an extra second. This rare time freezing phenomena is at first glance both shocking and underwhelming. I know the first time someone told me about it I went: “WOW!….and it’s only a second so, uh…yeah. Wow…”

But don’t let the short duration of this time change fool you. First off, globally clocks will “freeze” at midnight UK time. Ummm, frozen clocks? Yes, you are in a science fiction movie. And it’s pretty cool.

Now the question is: What do you do with that extra second? Here is where I am going to ask you to do something. You should get involved in a global campaign to improve the lives of girls and women through a 1 second march. (See what they did there? A 1 second march when you get an extra second? Yes, it is that clever!).

Your 1 second march is a small contribution of your time that has a huge impact. Your march will be joined with others (Melinda Gates, Usher, and Coldplay just to name a few) and presented to world leaders at key events this year. The march is a global movement to make sure world leaders prioritize girls and women in the upcoming Global Goals that will guide international development for the next 15 years. To understand how important prioritizing girls and women is, check out our month long spotlight on this crucial issue.

And now that you know you have that extra second today, use it now to support girls and women. The world will be a better place with you marching.
