The World Health Organization reports that globally, 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, leading to waterborne diseases that kill over 440,000 children below the age of five annually. Despite the immense challenges, local changemakers around the world work tirelessly to transform their communities.
At just 13, Bonface O became such a leader in his small village near Kenya’s Lake Victoria. Living in Bondo and attending Gobei Primary School, Bonface faced the harsh reality of clean water scarcity and the risks from contaminated water daily. However, the introduction of the P&G Purifier of Water packets, a household water treatment product through the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program, brought change. Bonface O didn't just benefit from this technology, but also became a champion, helping his community experience the hope, health, and growth that comes from clean water.
Now, at 20, Bonface O continues to shine brightly, using his experiences to lead and inspire. His journey from a student battling health issues to a community leader advocating for improved hygiene practices in his village exemplifies the ripple effect of clean water.
At the Global Citizen Festival in 2014, during a campaign for the Water for the World Act, P&G stood up to provide clean water to school children in Nigeria and Malawi. A decade later, after their first Global Citizen Festival commitment, the impact has continued to blossom. Since the not-for-profit initiative began in 2004, the CSDW Program has delivered over 23 billion liters of clean water in more than 100 countries, showcasing the power of transformative partnerships and groundbreaking technology.
The simplicity of the solution lies in the tea-bag size P&G Purifier of Water packet. It's an easy-to-use solution that can convert 10 liters (2.5 gallons) of contaminated water into clean drinking water in just 30 minutes, using only a bucket, spoon and cloth. This seemingly small innovation has been a game-changer for families once plagued by poor water quality.
The CSDW Program’s broad impact is made possible by collaborating with over 150 partners, including international NGOs like CARE, Save the Children, and World Vision. These organizations distribute the packets and provide education to the most affected communities, helping improve millions of lives.
Despite these achievements, the work is far from over. Billions are still affected so the urgency for clean drinking water is still great. This target represents not just a number but the promise of changing countless lives by helping more children grow up healthy, attend school, and contribute to their communities.
Good news is clean water access can start with easy-to-use solutions like water purification packets. By supporting the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, you can play an important role in this mission of delivering 25 billion liters of water by the end of 2025, bringing the transformative power of clean water to even more children in our world. So, go on, what are you waiting for? Join the Sprint and P&G will donate a year of clean water to a person in need.
*P&G will donate the equivalent of one year’s worth of clean water (US $7.30) to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Fund for every ‘Be A Water Champion for All’ Sprint completed on the Global Citizen app from September 21, 2024 – December 31, 2024, up to $25,000 USD.
