Feminism has gotten a bad rap in mainstream culture. The history of the movement, which has been fraught with internal division and political splintering, can be complex. But the definition of a feminist is not!
Comedian and song-writer, Katie Goodman, seeks to make the true definition of a feminist known - particularly in response to celebs like Lady Gaga, Bjork, Kelly Clarkson, and Katy Perry who have dismissed the identification.
In her hilarious ballad, Goodman croons the definition of a feminist as "a person who believes in social, political and economic equality of the sexes." I think most people can get behind that sentiment, right?! So, why the general pushback against the f-word?
Goodman sets the definition straight!
Again, feminism has the difficulty of being blacklisted as an identity (my personal view is that this was a targeted campaign against the movement by political opponents, but I digress…). A feminist is not a man-hating, bra-burning, buzz-kill. She, or he, is simply a person that believes in the equality of the sexes!
Let’s claim feminism as a term not to be rejected, but celebrated. Along with Goodman, Emma Watson has been a champion of gender equality with her HeForShe campaign. Listen to the playful anthem (above!), and I dare you not to be humming, “You’re a Feminist,” throughout the day!
