Isadora Cerullo's rugby sevens team might have been eliminated on Monday evening, but she left her final game in a celebratory mood: following the game, her girlfriend of two years, Marjorie Enya, proposed to her.

She became the first athlete at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games to get a marriage proposal. That it was a same-sex proposal makes it all the more powerful.

Cerullo holds dual citizenship in the US and Brazil. During the 2012 Summer Games, same-sex marriage was illegal on a national level in both Brazil and the US.

Brazil's supreme court legalized same sex marriage in 2013, and the US Supreme came through with a decision in 2015.

“She is the love of my life,” Enya told the BBC. “The Olympic Games can look like closure but for me it’s starting a new life with someone.

“I wanted to show people that love wins.”

Today, the couple can openly celebrate their love in both countries and, now, the world is celebrating alongside them.

There are at least 45 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex athletes at the Rio games, according to Outsports.
