In Islamic tradition, eating pork is forbidden.

Many Muslims around the world dedicate themselves to the dietary guidelines of Halal —  for example, 90% of American Muslims opt out of eating pork products like bacon.

So when a London man chose to assault a Muslim teen by striking her with bacon, it was intended to cause deep offense.

A man named Alex Chivers was filmed shouting Islamophobic slurs at two traditionally dressed Muslim women in the streets of North London.

Implying they were terrorists, Chiver called them them “Isil scum” and screamed “you deserve this” as he taunted the women with bacon and his friend recorded the confrontation.

The 36-year old man then charged at the women, striking the younger one with an open packet of raw bacon.

The attack took place around 4:40 p.m. on a sidewalk in Enfield in north London. Police later confirmed that the victim wasn’t injured, but still “very distressed.”

Chivers faces six months in jail for what is being considered a hate crime. He pleaded guilty to one count of racially or religiously aggravated common assault, and one count of causing racially or religiously aggravated alarm or distress at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on June 29.

Detective Constable James Payne called Chivers’ crime a “truly shocking incident.”

"The victim was out with her mother and getting on with her day when Chivers abused her and then set upon her with something he knew would both upset and offend her,” he explained to The Telegraph.

The attack isn’t an isolated incident in London.

British Muslims have been subject to a spike in hate crimes after the London Bridge attack in early June. According to figures released by London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, there has been a fivefold increase in reported Islamophobic attacks in the days following the tragedy. Beyond London, police-reported hate crimes against Muslims in Canada have increased 60% since 2015, there has been a large rise in anti-Muslim hate groups throughout the United States, and similar trends are occurring throughout the world.

Detective Payne encourages “all victims of hate crime to contact police so that the culprits can be identified and brought to justice."
