Two of six members of a Burundi robotics team were reportedly seen crossing into Canada after being reported missing in Washington, D.C., earlier this week.

The robotics crew was competing in the FIRST Global robotics competition in Washington, the same competition that a team of Afghan girls competed in and made headlines when they were initially denied visas.

The Burundi teens were last seen around the time of their final events on Tuesday. When their chaperone went looking for them at the dorms at Trinity Washington University, he discovered their luggage were missing, too.

Then on Thursday, the day the teens were due to return to Burundi, Don Ingabire, 16, and Audrey Mwamikazi, 17, were both seen crossing into Canada, according to Metropolitan Police spokesperson Aquita Brown.

Some have speculated that the teens are seeking asylum from their war-torn home country. There has been unrest in Burundi for many years.

Canesius Bindaba, the team’s coach, said that he had heard rumours the teens might be planning to stay in the US, but he hoped it wasn’t true, he told The Washington Post.

“I just tried to build some kind of trust, hoping they were just rumours,” he said over WhatsApp. “I feel cheated and disappointed by those who planned this behind my back.”

Aquita Brown, a spokesperson for police in Washington, D.C., said that the search will continue for the teens, but that police have no reason to suspect foul play in their disappearances.

Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP did not comment on if the two teens had crossed into Canada.
