Humanity was dealt a sad blow with the announcement of the death of Leonard Nimoy. The actor was 83 when he passed away from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy was a gifted actor, director, TV host, and a devoted patron of the arts. He was also, and always will be, remembered as Spock, the moral compass of the “Star Trek” series.

Trekkies across the world, including the President of the United States, wished to bid adieu to the performer who gained household name status through his performance as everyone’s favorite Vulcan. Obama reflected on his meeting with Nimoy where he approached the actor with a Vulcan salute, stating in a condolence to his family, "I loved Spock."And the US Predisent is not the only one bereaved...

With global problems seeming to multiply like Tribbles, it’s valuable to reflect on the stoicism of Spock. Spock reminds us that justice, courage, and loyalty are the most logical ways to live. Global citizens can follow his lead, as we collectively take on the opportunities of 2015 to tackle extreme poverty by 2030.
