For me, it’s pretty easy to answer the question “What’s your favorite food?” (YOGURT!) and “What’s your least favorite food?” (Pizza… yeah, yeah. I know. I am weird). But what isn’t an easy question is, “What do you do to eradicate the daily hunger experienced by 1 out of 5 American children daily?” While the startling high number from this statistic should warrant more than a minute of silent contemplation, it certainly also deserves the response, “We need to do something!”

In a touching video created by Soul Pancake in honor of National Service Month, kids are asked to give solutions for helping to end hunger within the United States. These young activists, armed with the fresh knowledge that many children do not get enough food, brainstormed solutions on a giant brainstorming wall.

Ideas to ending hunger included “soup kitchens,” “free food in schools,” “food machines,” “local farms,” and (the simple, yet effective!) “sharing.”

“If all the kids in the world got together and did something big, they could impact the whole world,” wisely summarized one young leader. I couldn’t agree more! In order for world hunger to end, we, global citizens, need to champion the rights of all individuals to have access to food.

When thinking about ways to combat global poverty, it’s important to understand the facts. More than 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty — a.k.a. less than $1.50 a day (which means, not enough money for nutritious food). From this 1.2 billion, 1 billion are children.

While this knowledge is startling, once we know the hard facts, global citizens, it’s time to take action! But how? Join the Live Below the Lineor click on the petition to secure food security to help people across the globe access food. We all need to do our part to help end hunger and poverty.
