Global mega star, activist and all-around icon Beyoncé doesn’t need protecting. Her music and actions have made her a role model to people everywhere (not just girls or black people) and her ability to influence her fans is almost unmatched right now. But when people started hating on her awesome and somewhat political Super Bowl halftime show she got one major defender: Jessica Williams.

If you have somehow managed to miss the rise of the awesome Jessica Williams, you either don’t watch the Daily Show (yes, she was on it when John Stewart was still hosting) or you just plain don’t like comedy. This awesome satirist and comic brought the house down with her defense of Beyoncé’s latest round of music and activism--and she made sure it fell right on the haters.

To understand the context here, Beyoncé has been a LITTLE busy in the last week. On Friday she dropped an amazing new video FORMATION that focuses on black culture throughout US history, then she performed at this tiny little sporting event known as the Super Bowl, then she announced a world tour. Oh and just to make sure her week was booked, she also announced a major new initiative to support children affected by the lead contamination in the Flint, Michigan water crisis.

During this string of activity, some people took exception to the fact that Beyoncé performed her song FORMATION at the Super Bowl. Deeming the performance too political and not “wholesome” enough for the event. Their problem seemed to be that the song talks about black people and had homages to powerful black figures and groups in US history during the actual performance.

So Jessica Williams stepped up to take on the haters.

The take down calls out those criticizing Beyoncé for speaking out on important issues. Everyone should be speaking up like Beyoncé. Injustice exists in our world today, in the US and internationally. And Beyoncé is one of the many people fighting that injustice, including through her work with CHIME FOR CHANGE to empower girls and women around the world and Global Citizen to end extreme poverty. Beyoncé and Jessica Williams have it right: No one should remain silent while fighting injustice.

In the end of this powerful defense of activism, Jessica Williams ended like all great satirists by “agreeing” with the haters: “You’re right … the fans deserve wholesome entertainment. Like watching 300-pound men give each other concussions while a crowd cheers like we’re extras in the movie Gladiator.”

Watch the video HERE for the full take down of the haters and watch out for the Global Citizen cameo at the 2:15 mark. Thank you, Chris! You are awesome as well.
