Jeremy Hunt, the Conservative Minister for Health in the UK, has been accused of asking a Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) survivor and campaigner if “girls like you” could still orgasm.

The allegations were made by Nimco Ali on the News Roast podcast with Heydon Prowse and Jolyon Rubinstein. Ali, an FGM survivor originally from Somalia, is the director of Daughters of Eve, a non-profit organisation that protects girls and women at risk from the gruesome procedure.

FGM is the non-religious procedure where female genitals are “deliberately cut, injured or changed” without medical justification. Worldwide, 200 million women are affected by it.

Describing a meeting she had with Jeremy Hunt four years ago, Ali also said that Hunt did not know what FGM was at the time. On the podcast, Ali made the comments whilst discussing a front page on FGM ran by British newspaper The Evening Standard.

“This man is the Secretary of State for Health, but he has no idea about FGM,” Ali said. “I don’t think he even reads his briefings.”

“He picked up the Evening Standard and saw FGM on the cover. So then he Googled (it), and found me.”

“So I got an email to say, basically, would you come in and talk to the Secretary of State, and I said ‘yes’, because we need data and the NHS is, like, right at the forefront (sic).”

According to Ali, she went to meet Hunt in his office. The very first question she says he asked was: “What I really want to know, Nimco, is, can girls like you have an orgasm?"

Ali, in response, quipped: “Well, it depends how good you are Jeremy.”

The hosts were audibly shocked by the revelation, describing it as “absolutely disgusting” and “deeply offensive”. However, Ali was also quick to point out signs of progress in the UK. Since that meeting, annual data has begun to be published by the NHS.

According to a report from Plan International UK, FGM is either discovered or treated at a medical appointment in England every single hour. In the UK, there were 8,656 assessments for FGM between April 2015 and March 2016, whilst those at risk in the US has doubled in the last decade.

The Department of Health has declined to comment on the allegations.
