This International Women’s Day it's time to focus on the progress women have made in the last 15 years and take action to build the world they should live in over the next 15 years.

The video above from Project Everyone gives an overview of how the challenges facing girls and women have changed over the last 15 years and where they are today. This is important as the international community just completed the 15 year project known as the Millennium Development Goals.

The progress made under the MDGs is proof that global, collective action can and does change the world. Now the world has the Global Goals, an ambitious road map to end extreme poverty by 2030. To accomplish this overarching goal the world must improve education for all, particularly the 62 million girls currently kept out of schools. The world must improve health outcomes and reduce violence against women.

The improvements the world must make around girls and women are at the center of achieving a world free from the injustice of extreme poverty. Empowering women to participate in the economy like their male peers will literally add trillions to the global economy.

Advocates around the world are gathering today, on International Women’s Day, to declare girls and women a global priority.

"Empowering girls and women is the key to achieving the Global Goals for the world by 2030, and there are now so many incredible campaigns fighting for their rights globally, it's not an issue that can be ignored any longer. This year on International Women's Day a powerful group of women is calling on everyone around the world to take action to promote the rights of girls and women and end injustice," said actress and activist Freida Pinto.

Activists are joining with political and business leaders to take concrete steps to support girls and women.

“Empowering women and girls is the single most important thing we can do to drive human development. Goal 5 on gender equality presents the biggest opportunity of our lifetime to achieve our ambition for a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive world for all. This International Women’s Day I encourage you to take action to empower girls and women everywhere. It’s not only the right thing to do – our vision of a prosperous and poverty-free world depends on it,” said Paul Polman, the CEO of Unilever.

You can be part of the change that shapes a better and fairer world.
