THE COMMITMENT

At the Global Citizen Festival 2013, Hewlett-Packard pledged to work to make HP LIFE e-learning entrepreneurship training accessible to over 15,000 refugees in 15 countries. This will be achieved by working with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and will be complete by 2015.

PROGRESS

Since the festival Hewlett-Packard has been working with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to better integrate HP LIFE e-Learning with the existing system so that refugees may have further opportunities to learn, and to start or expand a business.

Plans are in place to implement comprehensive field training for UNHCR staff, implementing partners, local entrepreneur support organizations and refugees.

IMPACT

Hewlett-Packard has made progress on delivering this commitment to refugees, and plans are in place for over 15,000 refugees to have access to HP LIFE e-learning entrepreneurship training by 2015.

Refugees with access to this learning opportunity can obtain skills in setting up a business, MS Office programs, typing, financial management, and second language apprehension, as well as gain access to remote work. Ultimately, HP LIFE e-learning training is able to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities, and in turn dignity, for one of the world’s most vulnerable groups.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once some technical platform modifications are completed, training field missions will commence, followed by marketing activities targeting refugees and displaced persons living in urban areas.

Global Poverty Project will continue to engage with Hewlett-Packard to support this commitment to 15,000 refugees, tracking its progress over the next year.
