The internet has been a-buzz with talk of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new docuseries after it premiered on Netflix on Dec. 8, 2022.  

While the six-part series tells the story of two individuals who found love in a hopeless place, it has also managed to highlight a few important themes and issues close to the heart of the Global Citizen movement.  

From vaccine equity, to racism, to how women and girls are treated in society, we loved seeing Harry and Meghan address these issues and more in their Netflix docuseries. Here are just a few moments that stood out to us while watching.  

1. Meghan discussing the complexities and challenges of growing up mixed-race

“People don’t talk about what it’s like to be mixed-race. So much of my self-identification was trying to figure out where I fit in.  And I think a lot of that is, you’re not white enough or you’re not Black enough, but I don’t see the world that way.” 

2. Harry reminding us of the importance of checking our internal biases

“One thing I’ve learned is that we don’t see the world as it is. We see the world as we are.”

3. Meghan and Harry talking about the vital need for vaccine equity

“For us, what’s deeply important is this idea of equity. Be it racial equity, gender equity, and in this sense, vaccine equity. To just be equipped with the information that we need to be able to better serve this larger purpose.”

4. Meghan speaking about the importance of empowering women and girls 

“Women don’t need to find a voice. They have a voice. They need to feel empowered to use it and people need to be encouraged to listen. And I think right now in the climate we’re seeing with so many campaigns, I mean MeToo, there is no better time to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people really helping to support them.”

“My wife and I believe that where you’re born should not dictate your ability to survive, especially when the treatments exist to keep you safe.” 

7. Meghan expressing the need to address systemic racism and build systems that actually protect and serve their constituents

“The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing. Because George Floyd’s life mattered, Breonna Taylor’s life mattered, Philando Castile’s life mattered, and Tamir Rice’s life mattered. And so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know. I know sometimes people say ‘How many times do we need to rebuild?’ Well, you know what? We are going to rebuild and rebuild and rebuild until it’s rebuilt.”
