RESULTS International teamed with Global Poverty Project to support Gavi, the Vaccines Alliance

WHAT'S THE ISSUE?

We’re calling for global support for vaccines as they are one of the most efficient, cost-effective and successful health initiatives in history.

Access to vaccines means that around 2-3 million lives globally are saved each year. Vaccines and immunizations come second only to clean water in reducing the global burden of disease. It takes just $23 for a child to be fully immunized against seven of the biggest child killer diseases. Despite this, 22.6 million children around the world still don’t have access to the most basic vaccines.

That’s why over the past year, global citizens have been campaigning for increased access to vaccines worldwide.

HOW DID GLOBAL CITIZENS RESPOND?

Global citizens are campaigning to see 300 million children immunized between 2016-2020, which will save between 5 million and 6 million lives.

So far, global citizens have taken over 45,000 actions to help increase access to vaccines and immunizations! Together, we’ve signed the petition to support increased access to vaccines and we’ve tweeted at key leaders like Congresswoman Lowey, Congresswoman Granger, Senator Leahy, and Senator Graham to thank them for their hard work to increase access to vaccines.

WHATS THE IMPACT?

This summer, the Global Poverty Project team has been spending time in Washington DC to build support for this important issue. After speaking with our team in July , 7 Members of Congress signed onto a resolution supporting increased access to vaccines worldwide! Here are a few quotes from these members about why they support the issue:

On August 12, Judith Rowland from the Global Poverty Project went to Capitol Hill to meet with key members of the House of Representatives. We worked alongside our friends at RESULTS to ask Congresspeople to continue support and investment in vaccines worldwide.

Here's a picture from our time on Capitol Hill building momentum around support for vaccines…

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

During the week commencing August 18, the Global Poverty Project will write to President Obama and key members of the administration to ask for their support towards increasing access to vaccines. Watch this space for key updates in the lead up to the Global Citizen Festival.
