Every year hundreds of thousands of people are trafficked across borders.

Whether they are lured with the promise of a better life, attempting to escape poverty and violence, fleeing persecution in their home-state, or taken against their will, they are put in an incredibly vulnerable situation- completely dependent on their traffickers, with no say in their future. For many, there is no happy ending.

Case in point: Malaysian media has just reported that Rohingya women who were being held captive at human trafficking camps in Thailand and Malaysia were being sexually assaulted by their captors.

Nur Khaidha Abdul Shukur, a survivor of the camps, told the media that every night young women would be taken away from the location where she was held in Padang Besar, Thailand, and gang raped.

"Every night, two or three young and pretty Rohingya women were taken out from the detention pens by the guards to a clandestine place," she said.

"They would be gang raped by the guards. Two young women at the camp became pregnant after the gang rape."

Her husband, Nurul Amin Nobi Hussein, reportedly said that he witnessed the same thing on the Malaysian side of the border.

While this story is especially tragic, it’s unfortunately not surprising- multiple human trafficking camps (and their mass graves) have recently been discovered in both Thailand and Malaysia. The camps are believed to be used to smuggle Rohingya migrants fleeing persecution and repression in Myanmar, where the government refuses to acknowledge them as citizens.

Since discovering the camps, Thai police have arrested nearly 50 people, including some of its own officials. Malaysian authorities say that 12 police officers are among those being investigated.

Regrettably, it’s this crackdown that has resulted in so many migrants trapped out at sea, as traffickers are afraid of being caught on shore.

While this news is incredibly disheartening, it’s also an opportunity for us as a global community to do better by our fellow human. The human rights of the world’s most vulnerable people must be protected at all costs to prevent events like these from happening. If you’re ready to join the global movement for change, sign-up to Global Citizen today.
