Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States today, capping off a whirlwind transition period which following a surprise win against Hillary Clinton in the November election.

While many have speculated what the real estate billionaire may do (or may abolish) as he takes his position in the White House, the country will finally find out what Trump has planned. Read more about Trump's inauguration speech here.

Here's how the day has gone so far in reverse chronology:

12:43 p.m. Former President Obama boards the chopper.

Obama and wife Michelle will be taken to Andrews Air Force Base, where they will board Air Force One for a final journey. They'll go to Palm Springs, California, for a much-deserved vacation.

12:37 p.m. The ceremony is over and President Trump and Obama are leaving the Capitol.

12:24 p.m.: The benediction is delivered.

12 p.m.: Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the United States.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath. President Trump then delivered remarks, thanking the American people. "This moment belongs to you," he said. "This is your day. This is your celebration. And this United States of America is your country."

Trump's speech ran for about 20 minutes, and he spent most of the time disussing the various ways he was going to make America great again. He reiterated several times, "It's going to be only America first. America first. America first." 

Trump also encouraged people to take action. "The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action."

11:56 a.m.: The Morman Tabernacle Choir performs "America the Beautiful."

11:53 a.m.: Mike Pence takes the oath of office.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is administering the oath of office for Vice President Mike Pence.

11:46 a.m.: Sen. Schumer takes the stage.

The Democratic New York senator said, "We face threats foreign and domestic. In such times, faith in our government, our institutions and our country can erode. ... I stand here confidence in this great country for one reason — you — the American people. ... I know our best days are yet to come."

11:41 a.m.: President-Elect Trump's Bible

Trump will be using President Lincoln's Bible to take the oath of office. The only other president to use that particular Bible is Barack Obama.

11:35 a.m. Sen. Roy Blunt delivers an introductory speech to the Inauguration Ceremony.

Sen. Blunt (R-Missouri) kicked off the ceremony by delivering a speech about times in US history when sparring political sides were able to come togother. He called the day "a national moment of celebration. But not a celebration of victory — a celebration of democracy."

11:32 a.m.: Donald J. Trump arrives at Inauguration Ceremony.

11:29 a.m.: Mike Pence arrives at Inauguration Ceremony.

11:25 p.m.: President Obama and Democratic Leadership arrive at Inauguration Ceremony.

11:20 a.m.: Melania Trump arrives at Capitol Hill.

11:18 a.m. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden arrive at Inauguration Ceremony.

11:05 p.m. Trump family makes its way to Inauguration Ceremony stage.

Ivanka, Eric, Don Jr., Tiffany and Barron Trump are at the swearing-in ceremony.

11:04 p.m. Donald Trump, Barack Obama arrive at Capitol

The president and president-elect are making their way through the Capitol Building now ahead of the inauguration ceremony. 

10:59 a.m. Hillary Clinton arrives at inauguration.

10:54 a.m. Obamas, Trumps Proceed to Capitol Building

The Obamas and the Trumps have left the White House and are driving down to the Capitol Building.

10:25 a.m. Trending Hashtags

Several hashtags trending on Twitter reflect the mood of some of Americans today. "Donald the Unready" and "Mourning in America" were top of the national trending list.

10:11 a.m.: #NoDAPL Protests

People protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline are trying to disrupt the inaugural events in Washington this morning. They are attempting to break the security line of people enterting the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.

9:45 a.m.: Donald Trump and Melania Trump arrive at the White House. 

The Obamas greeted the Trumps at the White House this morning in a traditional inauguration day event. The couples exchanged hugs before going inside for coffee.

7 a.m.: Protests in London.

While plenty of protests have been taking place across the US, this morning saw some activists voice their thoughts on the incoming president from London. A banner reading "Build bridges not walls" was hung from London's Tower Bridge, with protesters help signs reading "Act Now" as dawn broke on the city. (Reuters)
