Our friends at the UN Mission in South Sudan are producing a series of incredible videos about life in South Sudan.

The focus of this first episode is the role radio has played in the history of the young country and how powerful it can be in building peace.

This great piece reminds us that the common impressions of South Sudan are not always right. All too often, when people think of South Sudan, they think of poverty porn and chaos. The common perception jumps to images of refugees fleeing violence. This has been an unfortunate element of South Sudan’s short history, but it does not represent the whole story.

This piece-and the others in this series- remind us that there is much more to life in South Sudan.

DJ Moro Isaac Lokombo brings an optimistic vibe as well as his dulcet radio trained tones to this piece, giving insight into the mind of a leader in his vibrant community.

As a person with radio background, I was particularly moved by his powerful statement at the 2:14 mark. What he says about the power of radio had me nodding along, wishing I’d said something that profound!

We’ll be featuring the UN Mission in South Sudan’s series over the coming days.
