Totaling a population of more than 185 million, Pakistan is the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area (inclusive of 146 districts/territories) and yet the sixth most populous country.

Thanks to our partners at the GAVI Alliance, here are five facts you should know about Pakistan, its people and its immunization coverage.

1. Official country estimates (as of 2012) rate Pakistan’s DTP3 coverage at 89%.

2. GAVI has committed funds totaling $820,222,125 from 2001 – 2014 to Pakistan

3. In May, the World Health Organization declared the spread of polio an international public health emergency and identified Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon as countries from which the virus has spread beyond their borders.

4. The CIA has ended use of vaccine programs in previous spying operations amid concerns for the safety of health workers. This was of particular concern after a wave of deadly attacks by militants on polio vaccinations workers in Pakistan.

5. I’d like to introduce you to Shankotila Bai.
GAVI Alliance

She's a Lady Health Worker in Mithrio Bhatti, located in the Tharakar district of Sindh Province. She provides basic health needs to women and children living in her village and raises awareness among mothers of child-bearing age about the importance of healthcare. On average, workers like Shankotila earn less than $5 per day.

She’s pretty incredible, dedicated and brave.
