Totaling a population of more than 96 million, Ethiopia is the 27th largest country in the world in terms of area (inclusive of 96 districts/territories) and the 14th most populous country in the world.

Thanks to our partners at the Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, here are four facts you should know about Ethiopia, its people and its immunization coverage.

1. Official country estimates (as of 2012) rate Ethiopia’s DPT3 coverage at 83%.

Oh, so what is DPT3?

Well, it’s not only a vaccine but also used as a very valuable indicator of a country’s performance of routine immunization. DPT3 is often considered the best indicator of access to basic services, including health services. In this case, DPT stands for: diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus.

2. GAVI has committed funds totaling $722,983,429 from 2001 – 2014 to Ethiopia. Check it out.

3. With help from Gavi, Ethiopia will havereduced its mortality rate for children under the age of five by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015, meaning that the country has reached its required target of Millennium Development Goal 4 on child survival. And it did so two years early!

4. Ethiopia is becoming a development leader on the African continent. In November 2013, with the help of Gavi, the country began immunizing 2.8 million children with a vaccine against rotavirus. Ethiopia accounts for 6% of rotavirus-related deaths globally.
