Earlier this week Canada’s 42nd election took place at polls across the country. Canadians casted their ballots to elect MPs in 338 ridings. The Liberal party, led by Justin Trudeau, won the election and will be heading to Ottawa to form a government in the coming weeks.

The Liberals made a historic jump from 34 seats in the 2011 election to 184 seats in last night’s election. The party swept Atlantic Canada for the first time since the 1980’s and claimed the entire Greater Toronto Area, which helped them secure a majority government of more than 170 seats.

The Liberal party has a strong history of supporting international issues--the idea of contributing 0.7% of Gross National Product (GNP) to foreign aid was created by Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Paul Martin, also a former Prime Minister, has been a strong champion of polio eradication.

Global Citizen looks forward to working with Prime Minister Trudeau and all of the MPs that make up the 42nd parliament to continue Canada’s strong legacy of working internationally to end extreme poverty.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is the first opportunity for Justin Trudeau to show his commitment to international issues. Polio eradication will be an important agenda item at the meeting and having Justin Trudeau recommit Canada’s pledge to ending polio will motivate other countries to step up.

Go to TAKE ACTION NOW to tweet at Justin Trudeau, David Cameron (the UK’s Prime Minister) and Michael Turnbull (Australia’s Prime Minister), calling on them to recommit to eradicating polio at CHOGM.
