If you’ve walked into a Walgreens within the past few weeks you may have noticed the lovely person at the checkout asking you to buy a red nose and donate one dollar to Red Nose Day with your purchase. (If you don't know what Red Nose Day is click here to find out!)

Most of us live in a world where we are asked to give money to charity all the time. And sometimes, our first reactions to being asked to give yet another donation can be less than positive. Especially when it’s Monday morning. And you’re tired. And all you were trying to do was just buy a snack....

Here’s my own personal thought process on being asked to buy a red nose and donate to children in poverty this morning (even not on a Monday)...

A one dollar donation! A one dollar donation! Who does this woman think I am? Can she not see that I’m buying the cheapest brand cheese balls even though quite literally everyone knows that more expensive cheese balls are exponentially better?

Having said that… I am buying quite a lot of cheese balls.

Children living in poverty have probably never even tried cheese balls.

Imagine a life without cheese balls… I can’t even think about it.

Maybe I’m too obsessed with cheese balls… this could be a problem.

Okay. Enough with the cheese balls. What was she talking about? Oh yes. Children in poverty. Donation. Red noses. One dollar.

Why would I want to buy a red nose?

I didn’t spend 20 minutes this morning putting concealer on my face just to go buy a red nose at Walgreens.

Actually… that red nose is pretty cool. I could wear it and pretend I was a clown. I think I’d be a really, really good clown. Everyone’s always saying how funny I am. And my Twitter feed is HI-LARIOUS.

Maybe I should quit my job and become a clown… Or a stand up comedian...

Right. Back to the point.

Ugh. But one dollar. No. It doesn’t seem like a lot. But I did just buy all these cheese balls. And yesterday I dropped my purse on the subway and was too embarrassed to pick up the change so I just jumped off at the wrong stop. And the small change really does add up you know...

It probably adds up for the children in poverty too… All those children… People suffering… Just because I want to save my change for extra guacamole at Chipotle.

Right.

That’s it.

I’m doing it.

My gosh. Sometimes I really am so generous.

I’m just such a kind and giving person.

I’m not going to make a big deal of this. Just casually slip it into conversation sometimes.

"Oh yeah, no big deal, just helped end world poverty, as you do."

Everyone’s going to be so impressed. I’m going to call my mum and tell her. She’ll be so proud. Might even cry a little bit. She’ll pretend she’s not crying. But I’ll hear it in her voice. The swelling of pride.

Maybe someone will give me a prize for all the good I’m doing. Not a big prize. Just a little one. I’d be happy with a medal.

Oh stop it. It was just one dollar…

But I still am very generous. The woman on the till looks super impressed by me. So does the man standing behind me in line. I’ve probably inspired him to donate. I’m ALREADY affecting change.

I shall wear my red nose with pride! As proof of my world changing powers and determination for social good, like superman’s cape, or Kanye West’s gold glasses, my red nose reveals my true meaning in life to the world around me.

I. Am. A Hero.

Now… where did I put those cheese balls?

Red Nose Day is a charity that uses the power of entertainment to create huge, positive change in the world. As well as selling red noses in Walgreens, they are putting on a huge (and amazing) show on NBC on the 21st of May and encouraging people to fundraise and give money to help children living in poverty. All of the grant money distributed by the Red Nose Day Fund will be given to a variety of nonprofit organizations that transform children’s lives.

When you’re asked to give a donation it can be really easy to say no. To give this one a miss or plan to "donate next time" you’re asked. But Red Nose Day is a truly amazing charity, with the power to make a big difference. So next time you’re in Walgreens, I’d encourage you to say yes, buy a red nose, and be a hero. Maybe just do the thought process a bit faster than I did this morning....
