Four-year-old Siahj Chase has got her priorities straight.

After a boy at school called her ugly, the little girl shot back with the perfect comeback: “I didn't come here to make a fashion statement. I came here to learn -- not look pretty.”

Man, I wish I could think on my feet like that- whenever I find myself in those types of situations, I turn into a deer in the headlights, unable to speak or respond with anything remotely intelligent.

Cici (as she likes to be called) sounds like a great kid, but her mom sounds pretty amazing too. It’s these kinds of values that we need to instill in our kids, and reaffirm as adults- that intellect, education, and kindness are more valuable than superficial things like appearances.

Or, as my grandmother used to say, “beauty is as beauty does.”
