If it wasn't enough to blame the radicalisation of young Muslim men on their non-English speaking mothers and sisters, David Cameron has taken the extra step of suggesting that Muslim women and their culture of “traditional submissiveness” catalyses extremism.

Given that Muslim women, just like other humans, are in actual fact independent agents of their own free will, many have taken to social media to express outrage over the Prime Minister's generalising remarks. Hashtag #traditionallysubmissive has risen as the digital rallying call for muslim women who are clearly tired of being spoken for by people and politicians who don’t seem to understand them.

Here’s #traditionallysubmissive at its best:

Salim Kasam’a mother, who not only raised a son, speaks 5 languages and is an educator

Yasmin Khan, and her incredible qualifications

Fiza Azlam, a dedicated NHS worker

A graduating Ruwayday Mustafaah

Sheline Janmohamed managing to speak for herself!

Afrah and her supreme English skills

Fuf invites the Prime Minister to see Muslim women as individuals

A country's foremost political leader struggling to understand or represent all of his citizens? This is sadly an all too common reality across many democracies today.  People rising to action and expressing their personal and community identities for the world to see despite all this? That’s something that deserves unending celebration. Thank you #traditionallysubmissive for showing Muslim women in a clear light that is so often denied them.
