‘Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise,’ Netflix

Directors Rita Coburn Whack and Bob Hercules present the first film to be made about renowned American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou. From her childhood in the Depression-era South to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana and her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, the film highlights the boundaries Angelou pushed to redefine history. Oprah Winfrey, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Alfre Woodard, Guy Johnson and countless others help paint the hidden moments of her remarkable life.

‘Time To Choose,’ Amazon

Narrated by award-winning actor Oscar Isaac, the documentary film takes an in-depth look at climate change challenges and solutions. It explores these questions in the coal-poisoned waters of the Appalachian Mountains and the oil and gas lands of Nigeria. The film shares compelling stories of the leaders, innovators, and everyday people fighting on the front lines for a more sustainable world.

‘Plot for Peace,’ Netflix

This documentary reveals the untold story of the fall of apartheid, and the one French businessman, dubbed “Monsieur Jacques,” that secured the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. For the first time on screen, the African heads of state, generals, diplomats, secret service operatives, and icons such as Winnie Mandela, recount how the front line states helped end a system of institutionalized segregation and discrimination.

‘Taxi,’ Netflix

In this docufiction, taxi passengers in Iran share their views and opinions with filmmaker Jafar Panahi as he drives through the country’s capital. Panahi, who was banned from filmmaking and traveling since 2010 on the grounds of political dissent, encounters strangers that portray life in the oppressive regime.

‘Virunga,’ Netflix

The documentary series, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, is the story of a brave group of park rangers who put their lives on the line to conserve all 3,000 miles of Virunga National Park, the oldest park in Africa. For years, these rangers have been beaten, threatened, and imprisoned by armed poachers and rebels, simply for protecting the park’s wildlife. The series highlights their dangerous work in going undercover to expose evidence of bribery and corruption.
