The world gets 1 second more this year. No seriously, it does. If you don't believe me read about the science and what not here. Spoiler: it's got something to do with the difference between clock time and atomic time. If you need more than that, seriously read the link, because that is not what you should be focusing on right now.

What you should be focusing on is how do you spend that extra second?

Check out the video above, because Melinda Gates, (you know her as a philanthropist, activist, all around awesome person, etc.) has a really good idea how you, and all your friends, should spend the extra second: Sign up to Global Citizen.

That's right, sign up to Global Citizen. With that sign up you can take action to end extreme poverty. You can engage in a worldwide campaign to improve the lives of everyone-women, children, men, old, young, EVERYONE- and make our world a better place.

It only takes a second to sign up, and this year you have an extra one. Use that second wisely and sign up to Global Citizen. If you don't want to listen to me, listen to Melinda Gates explain it much more eloquently in the video above.

Disclosure: Melinda Gates is the co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a funding partner of Global Citizen.

Editor's note: This piece has been updated to include a disclosure that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a funding partner of Global Citizen. We regret the oversight.
