Brazil is auctioning oil exploration blocks in some of the Amazon’s most ecologically and culturally sensitive areas — just as it prepares to host COP30, the world’s biggest climate summit.
These blocks sit on Indigenous lands, fragile coral reefs, and biodiversity hotspots. They put endangered species at risk. They violate the rights of local and traditional communities, who haven’t been properly consulted — as required by law. And the threat isn’t hypothetical: the Equatorial Margin, where Petrobras wants to drill, is almost impossible to protect from oil spills.
Even worse? Much of this oil may never be extracted. The blocks are expensive, risky, and often fail to attract bidders. But they remain on the map, waiting to bring destruction.
Brazil doesn’t need this oil. It already has one of the cleanest energy mixes in the world — and the tools to lead with wind, solar, and innovation.
As pressure builds, we must act. Together, we can show the ANP, Petrobras, and President Lula that the Amazon is worth more standing — and oil has no place in its future.
Add your voice. Stop the auction. Protect the Amazon for generations to come.
