Africa is bursting with clean energy potential — from powerful sunshine to flowing rivers and strong winds. Yet, over 600 million people on the continent still live without electricity. That’s not due to a lack of innovation — but a failure of financing.
Today, Africa receives just 2% of global investments in renewable energy. Projects that could transform lives get stalled by sky-high interest rates, unfair loan terms, and outdated risk perceptions that paint African countries as “too risky” to invest in.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Local entrepreneurs, communities, and governments are ready to lead the clean energy transition — they just need fair access to the funding.
That’s why Global Citizen is demanding climate action. We will be at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi this September, and will be pushing for a bold commitment: funding that delivers clean energy access to at least 1 million people as a start. By powering homes, schools, clinics, and small businesses, we’ll light the way for a just, green future for all.
